    Prepress Tips for Designers

Having been on both sides of the fence, I know it's fun to rant at that kind of stuff. That being said, I'm just glad not all prepress workers have been replaced with such systems: SendMyAd

    Job Training

Ouch!!! So sad and so true... We have a law here that requires every business with $1M+ total salary to invest 1% of that amount each year on training or pay that amount to a government ruled training fund. Still, I've heard of companies that asked their employees to falsely claim they've...

    Convert To Destination (Preserve Numbers)

I ran into the same situation as yours in the past where I was getting unwanted CMYK to CMYK conversion (when exporting to PDF with "preserve numbers") when the document was previously saved with another CMYK profile. If what you really want is to preserve CMYK values, on a Mac you can use the...

    Convert To Destination (Preserve Numbers)

In menu Edit/Assign Profile, is your document CMYK space the same as your working space (the one defined in your CMYK Color Settings)?

    Stroke On Type

I encounter this a lot with PDFX/1a showing thin lines (atomic region borders) which is typically just a PDF display thing. When in doubt, I zoom in and sure enough the lines are either gone or disappear after I uncheck the "Smooth line art" box of the page display preference.

    Automation Engine 12 and Scripting

If it's something you do all the time, several times a day and one single click on a script can save you 20-30 seconds each time (go to PDF export menu, select the good preset, select the appropriate saving location, click the "save" button, then click the "export" button) then the math is...

    inkjet upgrade help

The Epson 9900 can have an online spectro (given that your proofing rip supports it) which makes proofer profiling/calibration much easier. That's what I use for SWOP/Gracol certified proofing here.

    Archive database

We use DiskCatalogMaker. It is (was?) bundled within Roxio Toast as DiskCatalogMakerRE but you can also buy it as a stand-alone. Very simple interface and works good for our needs. FUJIWARASOFTWARE - DiskCatalogMaker for Mac

    photoshop info sheet

If you're on Mac platform, you can use the following script that will first prompt you to choose an image, then the script will instruct Photoshop to open it, gather some info, close the image and set your Clipboard to the info. All you have to do is "Paste" the info in a text document or...

Photoshop history logs - detailed metadata

The way I understand it is, if enabled properly in Photoshop preferences (see attached), you can track the whole file history log in terms of opening, saving and detailed manipulation history, just by going in the history pane of "File info" menu. I think that info can also be accessed via...

Photoshop history logs - detailed metadata

Thanks for jumping in Leonard (I was kind of hoping for this). That confirms what I thought. And once again, it's such a great tool to track down the history of changes that were made to a file. I actually wish other Adobe products such as InDesign would implement that.

Photoshop history logs - detailed metadata

Hi, I was having a discussion where I suggested our Studio people to implement the use of detailed Photoshop history logs saved as metadata inside the file. I find it to be a great tool to track changes made to an image since, in our regular workflow, different people can make changes to a...

    Nchannel in InDesign

Not sure if you're placing the supplied PDF in InDesign and then print to your Roland Versaworks rip but have you tried checking the "Simulate Overprint" in the Output pane of the Print menu (you have to choose composite CMYK) to see if it will rip properly?

Acrobat X Output Preview not accurate

capitalcolour, there doesn't seem to be an output intent tagged in your PDF, so Acrobat is using your color settings preference to choose what simulation profile to use in Separation Preview. My default CMYK working space here is SWOP2006_Coated3v2.icc, so that's the simulation profile being...

    PDF Trapping Solution?

Same situation here and while I used to supply properly trapped PDFs to publications, I gave up after having some of my files butchered by automated prepress workflows that were ignoring the PDF "trap flag true". And as ajr mentioned, it makes more sense letting the printer trap everything at...
