Build of DeviceN Spot Colours in a PDF

I never quite got to the bottom of it but I was getting really weird cmyk splits as an alternative colour space to a Photoshop Duotone EPS (with two PANTONES) placed into quark8.1 and either Exported via JAWS or Print Postscript then Distill. There seemed to be some heavy duty unwanted color...

Build of DeviceN Spot Colours in a PDF

Pitstop sometimes reports the Alternate color space percentages. Typically from Quark you see conflicting definitions for the same DeviceN on an object by object basis. Often quark objects have Alternate space Lab and placed EPS have Alternate space cmyk.

    PDF Proof workflow

Get your customers who don't have Acrobat Pro to turn on Overprint Preview in Acrobat Reader's preferences. This should them allow then to see the file correctly.

downsampling pdf in Indesign & Illustrator does nothing?

With placed images, different image formats split at different points (seems to be based on total number of pixels (trying to remember...if this is only when flattening?... I think EPS splits at smaller total pixel number then TIFF then PSD)) when Illustrator writes the PDF part of the file...

CS5 on MAC: What is best hardware?

Given a choice between an early2009 27" iMac i7 with the 512MB graphics card or a late2009 27" iMac i5 with the 1GB graphics card. Which would you go for?

Prinergy not seeing Q8 PS Geometry

Quark introduced a checkbox in the print menu to include PDF Trimbox data with 8.1, is it the same on both macs? Prior to that, Distiller probably needed help with a Prinergy startup file, is it possible that one of your Acrobat 9 didn't get that installed during the Workshop installation.

2 things I wish InDesign had, which Quark does have

A specific example would be for interlocking cartons, each individual carton would have different offsets and PDF Boxes due to inconsistent artworking in Illustrator. Each InDesign bounding box would be consistent but may have extra bleed on one edge. If you have say ten cartons and Sheet1 uses...

2 things I wish InDesign had, which Quark does have

can InDesign copy the image from one picture bounding box into another and hold the x y offsets yet? Couldn't manage this with CS2 or CS3

Control Separations when making a PDF

Count me in, in needing this feature. Foil die makers tend to need really simple files, definitely no transparency or layers, even Overprint preview can be a problem. Additionally it gets really complicated when the cmyk knocks out to form the shape of a foil separation.

    DCS, Artpro Files

InDesign (CS2 and later I think) can convert DCS 2 to composite PDF, not sure about DCS 1. It may be that these are copydot, can you open them in Photoshop?

    Artwork Property

Its best to not get worked up about it and just burn it all to disc. Obviously if its a lot of hours you could charge an unarchive cost. If the customer genuinely is making corrections and coming back then its going to be a lot easier dealing with correct files than fixing junk again. If you...

    Preps 6.01

I've got my own thread about collation marks on the GUA forum not working when Heads are in different directions on different sections. I still can't get it to work with Preps 5.3.3 However with Preps 5 if you want more than one section on one sheet you used to only be able to choose it at...

Drop Shadows and Spot Colours oh my.

Quite often transparent TIF coloured as a spot will be flattened by InDesign into the PDF as Overprinting White. If its changed to cmyk the overprint no longer works on underlying cmyk, it needs a RIP to be set to simulate the overprints. If you go back to InDesign and change the spot colour to...

    pantone text on layers problem

Could it be in the original post that a PANTONE can not overprint itself, so each version would have to be a different ink for the overprint approach to stick.

    Opinion of Quark 8

Excellent post William. I don't want to defend Quark's color management, which seems to be only half thought through. I'm not even sure of the decision processes it makes but in your example I see it like this. Postscript doesn't support ICC profiles so when you save an EPS it can't embed the...

    DCS images

DCS to PDF support I think came in with CS3 (though I may be thinking of Illustrator). Also because this is a copydot it may be different anyway. I'd try and print separated postscript from InDesign and go from there.

Opening Q4 originated files in Q8

Complicated text is almost certain to reflow. Its not just that you are dealing with Quark4 files, as text can reflow due to chip or OS. Whether you can use these files is going to depend on just how complex they are, its often quite a quick run through to fix the text issues by tweaking a few...

Prinergy - did you over buy or under buy

What did you get, and what did you not get? We went for Prinergy Powerpack it offered the advantages of full Prinergy plus specialist tools for handling packaging. All the bits/options that make up Prinergy are so complicated that even the sales people struggle to say what's included and whats...
