Each of our customers upload files through our portal. These files can be anything (AI, PDF, indd, etc....). So I made a workflow that takes in the uploaded files from our portal. It first routes them based on file type. If they are not PDF's we make them into PDF's and then we preflight them...

Cool, works like a charm. Wrote a script that will take a indesign package file, open the .indd, relink if needed, load fonts and output a PDF based on my export presets. After that the workflow normalizes the PDF.

Has anybody developed any scripts to work with Automation Engine 12? I'm just curious as to what kind of uses it might have in the industry. I'm excited about the capabilities, just not sure where to apply them.

we work with Normalized PDF out of illustrator because we are using dynamic barcodes and other esko plug-ins. Normalized PDF stores all the metadata that we need to keep.

Ill be honest, we use both power trapper (AE & Deskpack & Artpro) as well as the PDF trapper (Nexus) which I believe is the same as the 4-step trapper. I do like the control of the power trapper. The ability to create custom rules is something that nexus was always missing and kind of screwed...

I did absolutely no calibration on that file. I just converted it with whatever profile was loaded. Yes, you have full control of how each separation looks.

LOL, well for us the value was keeping the customer. We also gained business from this customer because their other venders where not willing to make the investment where as we were.

I can tell you for a fact that the plug ins work on CS 5.1 (that's the latest we have). As far as a customer ripping it out. Not all that surprised. Not because the product doesn't work, but it is difficult for a prepress house to separate to expanded gamut when they are dealing with outside...

You still have to worry about live text. Don't believe PDF import does anything to handle that differently.

I know we use Artios. Our guys like it because it is very easy to create boxes based on standards. All they need to do is plug in the dimensions. I have not heard of Engview, but im also not a cad guy.

Is there an advantage? Not technically. We do it because it saves the operator from having to do it. Just trying to save time. The reason Esko doesn't mention it is that they have a policy not to support or write scripts. The scripting assistant is very new in AE and most of their installers are...

usually when I script the export of PDF from either Quark or InDesign I have the script load a folder of fonts into the user fonts folder and then remove it when it is done. I guess it depends on how your job folders are set up. We have a job folder with sub folders (fonts, images). o

In AE12 (Automation Engine 12) you can have a workflow that takes native files (inDesign or Quark). The workflow would route based on file type, if it is inDesign it would route to a path that would run a script (applescript or javascript) that would open the document, link images and export to...

Yes, AE10 will do auto trapping on PDF files. You can even have a script in AE12 auto convert the Quark and InDesign files to PDF all in line with your workflow.

Totally Agree, I'm disappointed in Esko. Makes me wonder if Esko thought this would be a simpler task then it really was.
