    Guaranteed payment on mailing?

Hi all, I had a new customer stop in yesterday who is liquidating & closing his retail business and wants to do a large EDDM run to the tune of $10,000. He said he could use vista but would rather support a local business even if it costs a little more. (His business is a few towns away?)...

Help please : What are various boxes in a pdf

We use 0.25" bleed (0.125" per side). I generally prefer to receive an oversize pdf (without marks) and let fiery impose handle the crop marks. If someone wants a 5" x 7" and supplies us with a 5.25" x 7.25" we assume proper bleed is included. Is that a bad assumption? We are strictly a...

Help please : What are various boxes in a pdf

What is the bleed box used for? If I have a postcard at 5" x 7" with 0.25" bleed my media box would be 5.25" x 7.25" and my trim box would be 5" x 7", correct? Isn't a bleed box redundant? And in actuality if I know I need to use 0.25" bleed then all I really need is a media box -- no marks...

Questions about Starting Digital Printing Business

In my opinion I would say probably not. We opened when Staples closed their smaller copy & print shops. There was already a local market that needed printing and we were able to capture a good part of it. We already had space in a larger, shared storefront so expenses were extremely low. It...

    Proofing / eliminating design mistakes?

Not client supplied files -- file creation they are contracting us to do. As stated, they are not checking their proofs carefully before signing off. Should a customer be in any way responsible for a typo we made by signing off on the proof? And is proofing solely on us?

    Proofing / eliminating design mistakes?

A grammatical error or misspelling, a player with a wrong jersey number, a typo in a year or house number, etc. The only way I can see to prevent that is to sit someone else down with all the notes and emails and cross-check everything. On a 100+ page journal this seems daunting.... Should...

    Proofing / eliminating design mistakes?

And just to clarify.. While I'm interested to hear how you handle those situations, I'd prefer to put a system in place to eliminate it altogether.

    Proofing / eliminating design mistakes?

What steps do you take to eliminate errors during design work? We've been getting busier with larger and larger design jobs. One of the issues we're facing is our customers are not carefully checking proofs before print. How do you ensure that no mistakes were made on your end during the...

Small Shops: POS / accounting / payroll ?

Thanks for the reply Keith. So it looks like about $100 per month for accounting and payroll? What about point of sale and register? It looks like everything now-a-days is a monthly subscription, even POS systems.

Small Shops: POS / accounting / payroll ?

Hi all, What is everyone doing for accounting, payroll and point of sale? We're currently part of a larger store and piggy-backing off their system but that will have to change soon. I've looked at QB and Xero with both POS & payroll modules. Are there other options I should consider...

    Small shop here...

You really want something better than dye or pigment for outdoor banners. We had a Canon 8400 and upgraded to the PRO 4000. They're both awesome for fine art and can hold their own against almost anything. But the prints are fairly delicate and susceptible to scratching. I would look...

    Small shop here...

Just keep in mind what you are getting into. You will need the wide format printer, backup set of ink, rolls of media which can get out of hand quickly, a rotary trimmer, cutting table & mat, 24" / 36" / 48" straight edges, grommet press, hemming tape, etc. Then you will find that many...

    Corner rounders

We've been getting more and more requests for rounded corners. Is it possible to get a corner rounder that can rival die cut? Our customers are picky and expect professionally rounded cards, not a hack job from a $300 table top unit.. Our results are mediocre at best. Cards are not consistent...

    .291 bleed to .05

This should be easy with Pitstop Pro. You can either make a custom bleed action to increase the bleed area to the desired size. Or you can use a page box set to the final size. I do this all the time when I get too much bleed or other crazy sized files. Select the proper page box, click...

Recommendations on a mid level oversize printer/scanner?

We use a Canon imagePROGRAF iPF850 MFP M40. It works well as both a color poster printer and an engineering scanner / printer. I believe it uses black/dye and color/pigment ink so it's not ideal for outdoor applications but it's quite inexpensive to run and prints very well for indoor use...

Matrix pneumatic laminators? Foil & spot-uv

I was looking at the new Duplo laminator / foiler / coater for our short-run digital shop but these Matrix machines seem to offer a lot more flexibility. They have the ability to laminate, foil, and spot uv (with special laminate). The biggest different I've found is that you can print...

    Software

I agree with Craig. Morningflight has come a long way with their latest update. They now offer tiered click charges, wide format, and very good default pricing. If you need high dollar MIS software there are more robust alternatives out there. But this certainly fills a void in the marketplace...

Reproductions -- Are we re-selling images or just physical prints?

I'm still confused. If a customer provides us with an image to print, are we: a. Reproducing that image for commercial use. b. Reselling that image for commercial use. c. Selling a service using a customer's image? Take for example Etsy. We no longer print all those birthday and party...

Reproductions -- Are we re-selling images or just physical prints?

I had a customer that wanted to us to print a picasso photo he found on google that was "labeled for reuse." I wasn't sure if that was something I can legally do. Am I re-selling the actual google photo, or just the physical print that we made from his supplied photo? Or if someone has the...
