    College Print Program Eliminated

I'm sad to inform that Erie Community College (SUNY Erie) in Buffalo, NY has eliminated their Graphic Communications Technology program (2 year Associates Degree). For 15 years I taught their 3 levels of press lecture & labs. Prior to Covid, we had about 24 freshmen students. After Covid, we...

Ink accumalition on cylindres unknown reason

I see plate "picture framing" in one of the photos. This is slight non-image area sensitivity that is cleaned off the plate, blanket and impression cylinder by the paper sheet. However, areas larger than the sheet size steadily accumulate that ink and build up, transferring to other nearby...

Offset preprinted #80 gloss through digital

Were shells printed with wax free inks? Did printer know they were going to be later digital toner imprinted?

    imaging linear plates

Prepress and Press are often in conflict when it comes to problem-solving and troubleshooting. Being fully digital, prepress may be more logical, while press may still be somewhat emotional due to their processes being more analog (pressures of rollers, plates, blankets, impression) and...

    imaging linear plates

I see you are a new member. Search on this site for "linear plates" for similar previous posts. The expert will be "Gordo" formerly from Kodak/Creo and his website is Quality In Print I think he (prepress) will say it's not necessary, but others (press) say it is.

    Matchprints too dark

The SID images you showed from top to bottom represent gloss coated paper, matte/dull coated paper and plain uncoated offset paper. Inkjet proofs are not made on actual production paper, they need special paper, but should simulate the color and gloss finish of the actual production paper...

    Matchprints too dark

I understand what you mean when you say "MatchPrint" but that product/term is obsolete. What ICC profile did you send them? Lowering the press ink (Solid Ink Density, SID) on uncoated paper will make the image look lighter but also much flatter/duller/less contrast. Get the results in you want...

    Reuse colors

You need a method (manual or electronic) to record plate usage data. Such as age (when made), number of printings, impression count, press operator note on performance. It may be better to change the entire set than just a single plate.

    Feed issue for QM 46-2

Fan and wind jog NCR paper (No Carbon Required) before loading into feeder. Are sheets sticking together in feeder from static charge, from too low RH in cold weather? Lower pile height, lower air blast, lower vacuum suction.

Printing b/w on a 4-color offset press vs 2-color press

Also consider how density measurements are being made. 4/c press may have an off-line scanner (with black backer). 2/c press may just be only handheld densitometer (with white or self-backer). Make sure K density measures the same on both presses, with different instruments.

    Distortion Calculation

Are these calculations from a trusted website (FTA) of from a custom written Excel spreadsheet? Mylar base (0.007") of photopolymer relief plate (0.067") is dimensional stable and will not stretch.

    WaterBased Coating Vs Varnish

Varnish is an ink without any pigment, so clear. It's body is very long and loose. Varnish gets applied thru the ink train, plate, and blanket. It dries like an ink and may need spray powder and maybe shorter delivery rack/tray to prevent setoff, blocking. Waterbase (WB) or Aqueous (AQ) coating...

Did you put a new pan roller in because of the same problem? If not, then put the old one back in and see if it remains or goes away? Try flipping the roller end for end? Try putting it in a different unit? Why did you change fountain solution?
