Maybe the Pantone monopoly deserves strong consideration under anti-trust law based on the essential facilities doctrine. They essentially are giving branding to a spectral power distribution/L*a*b* number and acting as a choke point for color communication.

I think printers and designers/creatives would need to mutually agree on any change. Pantone is a long-established incumbent with this- probably very difficult to change.

When Xrite went from the i1pro to the i1pro2, they did have an upgrade program to upgrade the i1io v1 to the i1io v2 to match the i1pro2. Some people even independently came up with 3d printable footplates for the i1io v1. Not sure why xrite did not make a similar upgrade offer for the i1io...
