InDesign Image not in the links pallet

I place INDDs in INDDs all the time. Packaging includes all the fonts and links from the placed INDD... if packaging is necessary (exported PDFs are better for most of my purposes). Embedding or pasting images into InDesign is another matter altogether. The inclusion of the ability to even do...

    Flattening PDF files

The Fiery's a bit tied up right now, and I've uninstalled CWS from the Mac I'm using, but there's a guide here ('Enable a native PDF workflow with APPE'): http://www.efi.com/resources/fiery-how-to-guides-and-docs/fiery-fs100-pro-and-fs100/

    Flattening PDF files

Yep, it's right there at the top of Job Properties (Use Adobe PDF Print Engine), and you can set it in Configuration under RIP > APPE.

    Flattening PDF files

The FS100 has APPE too. You can choose it in the options for a job, or set it as the default. Using APPE, we don't see the transparency issues we used to with older Fierys (which mostly involved transparency interacting with spot colours).

And you're using APPE? I've not seen any transparency issues on our IC-308.

    RGB to CMYK

I'd guess they did the same conversion you would (sRGB - FOGRA39), but weren't as perturbed by the on-screen representation of the inevitable colour shift as you were. Looking at the results as real ink on paper aren't generally as worrying as seeing R0 G0 B256 turn to C93 M75 Y0 K0 in an...

What do the 256 Levels in 8-Bit Bit Depth Mean ?

Looks like a mere semantic disagreement to me, but I wouldn't describe levels of R, G and B as 'grey levels'... but I might with the levels on a plate. Maybe it's just an intuition thing, because there's generally less need to see and control individual RGB channels than there is with ink. You...

Can I print via Parallel port or USB port on the KM6500

So, the Fiery is up and running, but isn't able to display? Have you tried installing Command Workstation on another computer on the network, and using that to control the Fiery remotely...

Install New PANTONE Colors in Illustrator or InDesign

There's been a lot of discussion about this on the Adobe forums, and it turns out that one can freely distribute the libraries generated by PCM without breaking any license agreements (which makes it a little more confusing why Adobe won't, but that might count as resale, which may be...

Spot Colors only preview in black - regardless of their InDesign CMYK recipe

Yep, it's a bug. It only applies to coloured images, though, not other elements in a custom spot colour..

Need help for purchasing a new car

Odd. He/she/it seems to ask silly but seemingly honest questions on a variety of forums, and genuinely interacts with the replies in a way that I don't think a bot could possibly do, and I can't see any spam. Subtlest troll ever?

    The Price of Newspapers

As much as I love the physical medium itself, I do think the decline of newspapers and the power they hold (particularly in the UK) is a good thing. Having said that, a lot of the clickbait rubbish that's replacing them is pretty worrying too.

    Converting spot colors in XMF

My impression was that they don't even go that far. Haven't Pantone have added about 400 new spot ink formulas since Adobe last updated their libraries? There have been long debates about this on forums, with Adobe's policy being "we only add what Pantone give us", even though Pantone's EULA...

    ICC Profile

Ideally, you profile each paper, assign that profile to its Paper Catalogue entry, and set 'Use media defined profile' as the output profile. For untagged PDFs, setting FOGRA39 as the source is probably your safest bet. Turning Colorwise off or bypassing conversion is rarely a good idea. The...

    General Print Standard

Yikes and yum. How did you get the detail back in that jam at the top? It's just not there, at least not in the lo-res jpg posted. Localised adjustment layers? Actually painting some of it?

    RGB Workflow Initiative

In general, I find it best to keep photographic imagery in Adobe RGB, right up until the RIP, where it will be converted to the profile of the output device or press standard (Fogra 39). I'll treat vectors and text a little differently, for instance to keep black text on the black plate. And...

    Prepress responsibilities

I don't imagine you'll ever get consistency in a smallish place. Here, reps might send me files to take a look at, then quote based on what I tell them. Or they might quote based on what the customers specifies, then find out the files don't correspond, so you either fix them or ask for correct...

    Feiry FX Rip 6.1.1

PDF 1.5 supports transparency, so I'm still not sure what you mean by 'flattened'. Have you tried PDF/X-4? That's the setting I'd suggest for PDF export from ID. For APPE, this guide has instructions: http://help.efi.com/fieryxf/OlderProductVersions/FieryXF6.0/FieryXF6.0_English.pdf

    Feiry FX Rip 6.1.1

Do you definitely mean flattened PDFs? Because that sounds like an oxymoron! Presuming you mean unflattened... I'm not familiar with Fiery XF RIPs, but based on regular Fiery RIPs, I'd suggest the same as DYP - using the Adobe PDF Print Engine. Does the file have very complex vector elements...

    Grayscale PDF not printing Grayscale

It's likely to be determined by where you are. GRACol will represent a common standard for offset litho printing in North America, whereas ISO Coated (or FOGRA39) is the more common standard in Europe.
