    Printer's Website

It was (is still?) possible to (kind of) do this. The website just needs to have links to all your competitors somewhere small so that the visitor does not see them. You can then run client side javascript to check which "color" the links have. Already visited links are in a different shade of...

    pAINtone? Anyone use Different....?

HKS is used mostly in Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HKS_(colour_system) PMS (well named!) is used as well. Sadly.

    The Upgrade Request

There exists an interesting thing software companies do: "To make feature X work as intended we would have to re-do our foundation, so we cannot do that." And this is how half-assed features begin to exist and creep into software until it is rewritten from scratch. To be fair, most "must have...

    Switching to Windows from Mac...advice??

There is an EFI RIP that is worth $75,000? Even "free" seems overpriced. So true. How does a secretary with several MS Office learning course diplomas use Excel to sum up all numbers in a column? She requisitions a calculator and starts typing the numbers in, and then transfers the end result...

    Plate curves survey

You got that wrong gordo: 40% on plate turn to 51% (62%) on press.

    Plate curves survey

Whoops. Forgot to mention that this is 40% on plate.

    Plate curves survey

Hi gordo, we did use one curve for our 2 sheetfed presses (SM102 and CD102 from Heidelberg), which were within 1-2% of each other. We then exchanged the CD102 for a CX102 and the difference between the 2 presses is much greater so that we now use one curve per press. Dot gain difference of 10%...

Do you recognize this dialog box?

As zoran said, this is Prinect Calibration Manager. Your screenshot shows an interesting case: Nominal is the input Dot% Process is the target Dot% (what is supposed to be on the sheet after dot gain) Measured is the Dot% that was measured on the sheet So this screenshot shows a linear...

    The Expert Response

This is so true that it is frightening. Even more frightening: those without training often do not possess the urge to better themselves or just think about a process and if there might be a better way to do it than how they are doing it now. So they don't even ask questions. Case in point...

    PDF X/4 Question

We talk to the customer about this mismatch. Most of the times we get a blank stare (through the telephone) and then we convert to the real destination profile. Sometimes we get new data with the correct output intent. The overwhelming number of those "correct OI" are just the same data as...

    PDF X/4 Question

This is true even if the PDF is not a PDF/X. If the customer only uses default settings, you will get SWOP-ish data. At least with PDF/X, you know you are getting SWOP.

    CMY no K?

Heidelberg's Color Toolbox also has the option to create a CMY-only profile. Not that this would be cheap, though ;)

    white CMYK overprints

I don't remember in which cases this happened, but transparancy flattening can produce white objects with overprint as well, and setting those to not overprint will be trouble.

    white CMYK overprints

This can be intentional as well: White text, apply drop shadow, set white text to overprint, only drop shadow remains.

    pages size in acrobate

You can do this really easy with Acrobat's Preflight (which you should be using anyway to check PDFs). There is an option under Preflight Profiles /Settings / Pages: page sizes differ ... I do not have an english version of Acrobat, but that (or something similar) should be it.

    Contract Proofs

I.e. every paper? ;) The paper that we print on has a white point that is more or less (mostly more) off the white point of FOGRA39/47. My favourite in that regard is some uncoated paper with b=-14. If we receive external proofs, we often create our own proofs and see if they match. More often...

    Can you export this file?

I agree with gordo here. The best reason given really is It leads to death by a thousand paper cuts. Now the customer expects that these images always come out the same, no matter "what they do". If they don't, YOU screwed up, not him. "But it worked all the times before without a problem!"...
