    Creative Cloud Install

Our team had one I.T. person download the installer and apply it to each design team member's machines over a weekend, or when users were out of the office over the course of a couple days. I believe there is a special edition that allows an administrator to set up multiple users. If each of...

New at this! resizing images for pdf?

Most of my images are high enough resolution that going from Tiff to JPG is not a problem. Mainly the need to resize incrementally has to do with fine patterns, rather than lossy compression as referred to in this (very good) article. For example, if you're resizing a family photo where Uncle...

New at this! resizing images for pdf?

In my experience, downsampling out of InDesign has created moires in my images when taken straight to PDF. I prefer to downsample in Photoshop in small increments (powered by a script or an action) reducing an image no more than, say, 250 pixels at a time. Of course, I'm taking 300 PPI images...

    Matching swatch to sample.

Gordo is right, except he's unclear about ISO 3664. From what I understand ISO 3664 is a standard that includes 5000K temperature lighting (among other things) - it does not replace 5000K lighting. That said, all 5000K lamps are not built the same. You'd be looking specifically for 5000K...

    L * a * b values for metallic inks?

Exactly what is the customer insisting on? If you're showing them Epson or Kodak proofs, that's naturally not going to emulate the metallic very well, as those machines don't output metal flakes at all? Or if they have their own spectrometer and are trying to measure, what can they possibly...

    PDF compression

As a production artist that send PDFs to lots of different places, I find it incredibly valuable to first ask what the printer/outputt-er requests or requires for the type of job I'm doing. If you haven't already, come up with some spec sheets that your customers can follow. Files sizes...

Need some help ink/water in balance or something

I totally agree - I'm just saying it takes about 15 seconds to flash a black light on a sheet in a dark room and see that there's a coating problem. It takes a lot more time and generates a lot more waste to run any press tests, especially given that the mill is willing to concede it is their...

Need some help ink/water in balance or something

I think it IS the coating, because you said when you run on another sheet it's okay. You can usually tell if it's the coating by looking at the sheet under a black light. It will be easier to tell if it's been printed on, but look at a clean sheet and a printed sheet. If you see...

    Linseed oil for cleaning rollers!

I was always told that they should be kept in their own covered, metal receptacle, and not mixed with papers or anything else that could burn quickly. Some folks go so far as to not ball them up - maybe folded, or laid flat on top of each other in the can. That said, I don't think the general...

    Linseed oil for cleaning rollers!

This is a fact. I know painters who use linseed oil and have had fires in their studio due to combustion of oily rags. Make sure they are disposed of quickly and that you have good ventilation when using. Of course if you're in a press room, you've probably got a ventilation system anyway.

    CMYK and SPOT Color

Ah, well there you go - I only shop for metallic cereal.

    CMYK and SPOT Color

Yeah, most times when you see a printed piece with Metallic color, that has to be done with a fifth ink. That's probably the most common example of a printed file with CMYK + spot.

    Average number of retouching hours

Thanks Blackbelt - that does help... When you say 8-20 rounds/images per day, is that per operator, or total for the department?

    Average number of retouching hours

I guess I'm just thinking bigger picture than you guys are...from a business perspective. Thanks. I'll look elsewhere.

    Average number of retouching hours

Thanks for your reply Rich. Maybe I can clarify some more... I'm not looking for the amount of time for a single silk image, or a single model shot. I'm looking for an average drawn from working on MULTIPLE images. I do retouching work also - I know there are a lot of variables. I'm trying...

    Average number of retouching hours

Thanks Lukas, but obviously I'm not asking the impossible. Many art/production departments I've come in contact with do monitor their work time hourly. Most departments also monitor their quantity/output by number. A simple calculation for averages is all I'm asking for. For instance, if...

    Average number of retouching hours

Hi all, does anyone monitor their average number of retouching hours, like how many hours per image, how many per day, etc. I know there are tons and tons of variables that go into this, and I'm trying to generate a benchmark specifically for my department so it's rather specific. But, if you...

    Matching monitor to printer??

Washed out? Washed out? First thing I would do is check that the files they're using are not RGB. If you're using illustrator, make sure your color swatches are CMYK (or spot colors if you're printing only one or two colors). Printing RGB images in a CMYK environment usually ends up with...
