oh just to add, i realise that if the design was full coverage that you wouldnt get that soft matte look anyway as the toner itself would create some kind of coating, but i mean mainly for text only designs, such as a wedding invitation with plenty of the card stock remaining bare.

maynardsayswhat, yeh the rich black was chosen because it is a large area. The paper is 80lb coated. oxurger no dramas. The man im dealing with is sales/pre-press/the lot. At the moment this printer is the most convenient so i have put up with it but in the end good service/attitude will win...

one font is a thickish handwritten cursive type font and will be around 25pt if i recall correctly. But i still want it to be crisp white, so might need to trap this also? The other is Avante Gard sans serif in Light and will probably be 12pt and some in 10pt. I have absolutely no experience...

Ive recently learned my lesson about using rich black instead of 100% black for text on a white background because of registration issues. But i now have to create a booklet design where the back cover is all black and therefore needs to be rich black. It has a small amount of white text on it...

so its definatley an InDesign problem then and not limited to just CS3. prepressRob thanks ill try saving out the whole design as eps and placing into illustrator see if that works.

yeh i mean under the compression part of the export window. I see now that illustrator mentions bitmap, so obviously not vectors. ok so i half i sussed out printing postscript file and distilling it. Its definatley done the trick. I just need to make sure ive got all the settings right as half my sheet is being chopped off. Odd about Indesign though. Thanks for all the ideas!

ok so tried pdf/x1a and no luck. My setting was actually on none. Its happening intermittently though. On 'none' ive had luck on 1 document where it came out fine. Have tried 3 times since and pattern has moved reference point randomly again. Its usually on only 1 or 2 of the items. I cant try...
