    Switch from Adobe to Affinity...?

I've given the trial a look and for 98% percent of the things I use Adobe for it looks like a great alternative. There's still a couple of extremely niche applications that keep me tied to Adobe. Eventually I expect Affinity to expand to include those as well (variable data functions, ability to...

Need to purchase a scanner - seeking recommendation

Another suggestion to consider - go with a smaller scanner and use the stitch feature in Photoshop to join the images together. I know pro artists who do this when scanning or photographing large artwork and they swear by it.

    Price Competition

Same at our shop - people would get 10-12 of them at a time. I had stacks around my house, took years before I finally used them all :)

    Price Competition

When I worked quick printing many years ago we would periodically gather up all of the "leftover paper" and make scratch pads out of it. The pads would be a mix of linen, laid, astrobrights, gloss. I think NCR even made it in at times. Divide them up in 1" thick pads with no chipboard. The...

Starting a shop for political printing

Just want to mention a couple of things to consider (this isn't strictly about equipment, but it does tie in). I didn't see any mention of your plans for prepress/graphics. Do you plan to offer design services as well or deal with freelancers/agencies? No matter how good the files are, you'll...

    Alternative to high resolution imagesetting

I'm currently making film positives on an Epson T5270 wide format at 2880x1440. It works for screen printing, but I don't think I'd want to try other processes with it. Besides the line screen limitations, it's just not consistent enough from one print to the next. Accurate registration can be a...

    Free images

My go-to for vector art is VectorStock - very reasonable prices. For free photos I usually go to Pexels. For reasonably priced images, I usually bite the bullet and go with Adobe Stock.

Pull up banner (how to make)

Hey BigSi, give The Exhibitors Handbook a try for templates. They've got a wide variety downloadable and sorted by brand/model. I've used them quite a lot in the past. https://www.theexhibitorshandbook.com/download-graphic-templates

What machines are used for printing on sign material?

Well in the case of the shop I worked at that did this - they had a wide format unit for printing posters and banners and they decided to branch out into doing more sign work. It enabled them to use their existing equipment and broaden what they could offer. Some shops also don't have the floor...

What machines are used for printing on sign material?

Another option is to print on a wide format roll - for example on self adhesive vinyl - and then adhere to the base substrate (foam core, corrugated, etc) before trimming. That's assuming you have a wide enough laminator to adhere smoothly. Trying to apply large pieces manually is a bit of a...

    Font Managment

I'm really liking Typekit for Adobe CC so far, but if you have a lot of fonts stored locally you might want to look at Suitcase Fusion. It runs on Mac and Windows and they have a cloud based option for teams. Plus plug-ins for Adobe, Quark, etc. that allow auto activation of fonts when a...

    Idealliance CMP certifications

Certifications such as A+ in IT and PMP in project management have to be renewed every three years. Two years is not ideal, but I'd be ok with it as long as the certification is giving me real world value and not just some letters to add to my email signature.

    Idealliance CMP certifications

Has anyone had experience with the Color Management Professional certification programs offered by Idealliance? I'm considering investing in order to expand my understanding of color management and add marketable skills to my resume. Any opinions on the courses? Value of the certifications? Any...

    Color Management Fundamentals

My 2 cents after many years in prepress and design - I prefer to always correct improper builds while prepping the files. Along with incorrect bleeds, rich black instead of pure black, etc, etc. Sometimes you can end up with color mismatches due to CMYK and RGB swatches being used in the same...

Thanks jeffkin15 - I came across Hybrid Software not too long after making this post. They look very promising for our needs, especially Packz :)

    Hybrid workflow recommendations (flexo/screen/digital)

Thanks bbertolani. I believe they looked into Esko previous to my arrival and decided against it, but I'll give it a look. I've worked with Switch before and would love to set up that kind of automation eventually but right now the need just isn't there.

    Bulk FedEx Barcode Scanning

Is it possible to print the FedEx labels to PDF in addition to actually printing the labels? If so you could print a second copy on plain paper for the driver to scan from and place the actual labels on the boxes.

    May sound strange, but.....

I think I have an old laptop around complete with serial port but I'd have to dig around to be sure. I believe it has a damaged OS though - do you have a license number and install media for 98 or 2000?
