Job purpose


Combining printed sheets into finished products such as books, magazines, calendars, catalogs, folders, directories, or product packaging is known as "binding."


Duties and responsibilities


• Cutting, folding, gathering, gluing, stapling, stitching, trimming, wrapping, and other finishing operations.
• Collating, inserting, product assembly, wrapping, shrink-wrapping, packaging and tending.
• Tends various machines and equipment and performs any combination of following tasks involved in binding books, calendars, and pamphlets, and assembling related printed materials in accordance with work order specifications:
• Punches holes in paper sheets, manually or by machine.
• Feeds covers, signatures, and sheets into various machines for collating, stitching, trimming, folding, ruling, stapling, roughing, indexing, gluing, and perforating operations.
• Removes, stacks, and packs printed material in various stages of completion on pallets as it accumulates on delivery table of machines.
• Inserts illustrated pages, extra sheets, and collated sets into catalogs, periodicals, directories, pocket portfolios, or loose-leaf binders.
• Inserts sheets and applies labels to envelopes or periodicals by hand or machine.
• Wraps product in plastic, using shrink-wrapping machine, packs products in boxes, and tapes lids of boxes shut.
• Records daily production using on-line data collections software.
• Cleans work area around machine.
• Performs other work related duties as required and instructed by the Photo Line Supervisor / Bindery Foreman.

Professional Certification:


Training: Most hand bindery workers learn the craft through on-the-job training. As workers gain experience, they may advance to more difficult tasks and learn to operate one or more pieces of equipment.
LPI prefers to hire experienced individuals, but will train workers with some basic knowledge of the bindery operations listed above.


Working conditions


Binderies are often noisy and jobs can be fairly strenuous, requiring lifting, standing, and carrying. They may also require stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Binding often resembles an assembly line where workers perform repetitive tasks.
Hand bindery employees are considered for the following employment: Part-time or Temporary. Scheduling is dependent upon nature of work and manning necessary.
Linemark is an around the clock operation and coordinates scheduling of hand bindery workers within each shift as needed.
Under supervision, weekend and holiday work may be scheduled.


Physical requirements


Sitting: Up to one-half hour a day, during an eight-hour shift. Standing: Up to eight hours, during an eight-hour shift. Walking: Within business – to and from LPI Departments. Bending, stooping, twisting of the trunk, and reaching: Up to eight hours a day, during an eight-hour shift. Lifting, pushing and/or pulling: Up to 50 pounds.
Special considerations: Any material weighing over 50 pounds is not required by LPI to be lifted or carried by the individual. It is the individual’s responsibility to request assistance regarding the lifting or carrying of heavier material.
