Outline fonts from InDesign CS3

Why do PDFs (with embedded fonts) linked in InDesign export as (unflattened) PDFs with fonts converted to outline sometimes? Every once in a while we come across this issue and I'm curious as to why. I've attached the original PDF (generated from a PC) and the exported PDF generated from InDesign (OS X 10.4) as an example.

What the ?

What the ?

Call me crazy, but you seem to have outlined type on top of non-outlined type.

Your original PDF text has stroke applied, which tells me probably you've had fake style applied, like Bold on font that does not have bold.
I've seen it happen.

Why did Indesign converted it to regular font without stroke, than put outline strokes on top, is beyond me.
Maybe it's trying to fix it to what it should be but than try to match looks of original??

I might be completely off the track here and it would be interesting to hear Dov's or Leonard's input.

Do you have your transparency flattener set to low or medium resolution? Under those settings, it converts all strokes to outlines. Without being able to see the original InDesign file, all we can do is assume you only had one text box on there, and like zoran said, a faux bold will simply output with a certain weight stroke on the font. And if you had it set to convert all strokes to outlines, that would explain why you have live text that is filled and strokes that are outlined on your resulting PDF.
