Rhin-O-Tuff to Debut Innovative Auto-Collating Punch at drupa

By Sean O'Leary

Although new inkjet systems are claiming a lot of the pre-drupa fanfare, there appear to be some startling developments in the post press world worth paying attention to...

For example, U.S. binding equipment manufacturer Rhin-O-Tuff has just told PrintPlanet they will unveil a potentially game-changing off-line automated collation and punching platform at the show. Incorporating BDT Print Media GmbH’s advanced media handling technology, the Tornado Autopunch EXâ„¢ automatically feeds, collates, punches and outfeeds ready-to-bind book stacks. According to our sources at the Boise, ID-based company, combining this particular set of capabilities in a single system is previously unheard of.

The Tornado Autopunch EXâ„¢ is targeted to binding service providers and can deliver a 40% boost in productivity. Conceptually, it was designed to eliminate four separate labor – intensive finishing steps: paper lift punching, separation of book stacks, manual punching of covers, index tabs or inserts and manual collation. Certainly one obvious benefit here is that operators are able to begin the binding operation while the punch job is still running. The auto punch can process up to 10,800 sheets per hour and is backed up by programmable job set-up, monitoring and changeovers.

At the heart of the Tornado Autopunch EX is BDT’s Advanced Media Handling module, which separates, lifts and transports an extended range of printable media. This innovative component represents a bona fide industry breakthrough because it expands the range of media types that can be separated and collated in a single job prior to binding. The Autopunch EX can actually process multiple media components in one stack: plastics, cardboard and even foil. The compatible media range is 60gsm – 312gsm and includes specialty materials such as vinyls and textured plastics.

According to the Rottweil, DE-based BDT, this patented technology is based on a “recirculating airflow generator technology” that uses only about 20% of the energy required by standard paper handling systems.
Rhin-O-Tuff has packed the Autopunch EX with several other performance features, including automated interposing for covers/index tabs/inserts and “patent-pending” paper accumulation technology that can auto-adjust punch lifts. The Tornado Autopunch EX will be demonstrated at Rhin-O-Tuff’s booth # Hall 6 Booth C79.
