Hi PrintPlanet folk;
My shop runs an Indigo 2000s. Normally I use InDesign CS5.5’s DataMerge, or QXP 7.5 XData for VDP jobs. We generate .pdfs that then rip on the Indigo. It works great.
Now using SmartStream Designer for VDP to the Indigo is being discussed at my shop. We tried Yours Truly with limited success in the past; however, SSD is fairly new for me, thus the questions.
The thing that I like about DataMerge & XData is that everything happens on the Mac so I can view final files prior to them hitting the Indigo. Now I am reading up on SS Designer, and although the documentation refers to SSD as a “plugin”, I get the feeling that the VDP interface (text flow, adding images) is all still happening on the Indigo, not on the Mac where I can actually see and edit what’s going on.
(Which means getting all the pieces over there, flowing whatever data, then generating .pdfs that we will then view again on the Mac - somewhat round-about workflow?)
Currently, we only do a small amount of true VDP jobs per year; most of our work consists of 1 or 2 forms of fixed elements per job.
I think our actual company goal here is to have a web presence where clients can submit excel files and images, etc., that will then be flowed into their specific templates…
Does SSD itself even offer a customizable “storefront” type of feature that will generate unique on-line interfaces for each client?
We have been looking at Page Flex and other storefront generating apps that may be more suited to our needs…
I would like to know if anyone can offer some insight as to how SSD actually works (the documentation I’ve found is fairly vague, and HP’s website offers very little true help).
I would also like to know if anyone really likes SSD, or if you find DataMerge or XData to be better tools for VDP.
And if you know anything about SSD’s storefront capabilities, whatever advice you can offer is awesome.
Is anyone using any other storefront web apps that they truly love and recommend?
Opinions please!
I am grateful for whatever info y’all can give me.
Thanks!
