Splitting large pdf's, document overhead etc

I have a task where I need to split some large pdf's into separate files.

Think 500 page document split into 300 files.

I am splitting them based on bookmarks, but this is taking absolutely ages to process in acrobat pro on a beast of a PC, and I suspect it is due to document overhead and the number of fonts used in the pdf. It is a compiled set of CVs hence many different fonts used.

What steps can I do to optimise the document before splitting it into separate files, bearing in mind they won't ever be printed and quality/graphic design considerations are not a concern?

Update - I just used preflight to convert fonts to outlines and then split it again. It split the entire file in about 10 seconds versus over 40 minutes.

I think it's a pity you had to outline fonts to get your file splitted. Which tool are you using? Only Acrobat?
How often do you have to split such files?

I used evermap, which is absolutely awesome btw.

Maybe there are other settings to avoid needing to outline fonts?

This particular task probably gets done once or twice a year

I see thanks. I am not an user of Evermap plugins, so I can't really say. You may want to contact them to clarify why you end up coming to outline your fonts.
On one side, you get the job done, but on the other end, it also cumbersome and might be harder to be processed further on.
If you had much more files, you would have other solutions but not applicable for such low need.

It's not about evermap, the same issue applies if splitting via acrobat pro.

The issue is that the document has hundreds of different documents combined together by someone with loads of different fonts used, and then when you need to split it, it is then trying to embed all of the fonts used and document overhead into each extracted section, which is what is taking ages. As I understand it that is a fundamental acrobat issue.
