Good evening,
I am the production manager at a medium-sized printing company, yet we offer a very wide range of services:
Creative (basic services, but provided adequately and attracts clientele)
Prepress, offset printing, digital printing, wide format, finishing (lamination, uv), die cutting (old heidelbergs and router), binding (saddlestich, glued).
I have the impression that the two most important factors for the economic survival/success of a company today are prepress ( and all the workflow were usually prepress is a part of it ) and postpress.
I believe that nowadays, everyone can manage to achieve decent printing. The difference lies, in my view, in how easily, quickly, and securely you reach that point (i.e., prepress) and the added value you provide to your customer's product (i.e., postpress).
I wonder if I have come to this "conclusion" due to my background in prepress or if I may be biased.
If you had 100 euros/dollars to invest in a business, let’s say with no problems and balanced resources between prepress, printing, and postpress:
Would you distribute it evenly? 33/33/33 and keep the rest for beers?
- all for beers not an option, sorry -
Or would you invest more in one sector? And which one?
- Saying all this, cause 20 years ago, printing was the most crucial factor for a shop, and a little earlier printing was the ONLY service of a shop, prepress and postpress were completely different market segments, correct me if i'm wrong.
Thanks in advance!
