xerox v280... odd error

my booklet stapler wasn't working, called tech, they replaced it twice, still not working, so I went through random troubleshooting...

turns out that running the covers through the T1 inserter is causing a failure with the stitcher. fwiw, I ran this same file a half dozen times over the past year without issue. Same file and settings (collate, stitch, spine press, face trim) worked if I ran the covers through a regular tray (5).

Tech is going to try to reload software in a few weeks, after his vacation, to see if that works. However, I've had the software reloaded more than a dozen times over the past 2.5 years and am a little tired of that "solution".

I asked him about replacing the wiring or other communication hardware/whatever, but he didn't think that would help, so not trying it.

any thoughts?

I don't have a solution, but I've had that same issue with our V280. The first year or two we had it I could insert covers on saddle stitched booklets through the T1 inserter, but at some point it wouldn't staple the booklets any more. They come out folded but no stapling. We've done the same and ran the covers through tray 6 or 7 since then.

Our tech looked pretty hard at it but didn't get it fixed. He escalated it to 2nd level support, I had a number I was supposed to call and work on it with them but never did. Since it worked through the other trays without charging me I didn't want to take the time to do it.

We have had software reloaded a few times since it started happening but it didn't fix that issue for us. Our fiery hard drive seems to go out and needs to be replaced every 6 months or so too, a lot of things get reset with that and that doesn't affect it either.

If you have a 8.5x11 booklet coming out without staples, then make a 8.5x11 preset. I think it is a software issue. Both the 180 and 280 have the same problem. So when you load the T1, chose the 8.5x11 preset (rather than let the machine auto select). Also it appears if you run the cover through any other tray, it counts as a click charge.

Check to make sure the two sheets are the same size in the Fiery. Sometimes 8.5 x 11" SEF and 8.50 x 11.00" are not treated as the same size to the Fiery, and I'm guessing the booklet making options being sent to the printer enable/disable based on the page sizes being the same for cover + interior. I think this is a Xerox issue in how they report the data to the Fiery. Perhaps your operator changed the way they indicated the sheet size to the machine when they are loading the job.

Are you using Impose or Hot Folders for this job?

However, it seems like there may have been a Fiery update recently that could have caused an issue...

I was running a job this week and was only printing a range of pages within a PDF I dragged into the Fiery. I was running pages 16-47, two-sided. For some reason, what was printed was 15-47, thus throwing off the pagination of the printed set. I almost didn't catch it. I double checked to make sure the PDF didn't have some weird page number settings, which it did not. Something had changed with the way the Fiery interpreted my instructions, as I've never had this issue before. Versant 180, not 280. I update the Fiery software regularly, but not the firmware on the printer, so if I had to guess this is Fiery causing both of our issues.

I should mention we only send pre-paginated forms to the printers. And we never have a sans staple issue using the pre-set size. This has been our solution for about 6 years now.

My V3100 booklet maker/finisher was replaced at no charge a couple of years into the lease because of ongoing issues that the techs couldn't resolve. I would tend towards Priceline's assertion there is a software issue however.

thanks!

it's 11x17, but I'll try a preset

and yes, click charge. v80 let me run pre-printed multi-page booklets exclusively through T1, but they stopped that so you have to run them through a tray to get a click charge.

Friendly reminder that Epson owns Fiery now, so we may be seeing the first fruits of this new ownership. I'm guessing all will be great, but there was likely some leadership change / procedural shifts as Fiery was brought under the Epson umbrella.

Oh. I didn't know this. I'm not sure how I missed this memo.

I can confirm an issue with the firmware in the T1 inserter on the V4100 (which I would suspect existed in the V3100 also). Especially if you are creasing the covers in the Creaser/Top-Bottom Trim module, AND have T1 Optimize Speed (Speed First) turned on. They had to take logs and install a custom firmware patch on our machine.

Assuming your inserter issue isn't page-size related... The interim solution for our machine, which might help you, is to turn off the Optimize Speed (Speed First). This will cause a delay between the cover being printed and the first sheet of the next booklet.
