    G 7 certification

“If you imaged plates from linear film and printed using ISO conforming ink hues to the specified densities then you would automatically achieve grey balance. Great” No such luck! The dot gains make grey balance (at density). The proofs were Matchprint SWOP. At density the midtone gain was...

    G 7 certification

So here’s a little ‘history’ of color reproduction. In the ‘old days’ we had ‘trade houses’ which produced color separations for the printers. I was one of those - so how did we know how to make the separation’s? We made them all to SWOP - (Specifications for Web Offset Publications) - based on...

    printing certification

. . .a great story-I did some consulting for a company (Branch Smith) in Texas. They won the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge Award - I believe the ONLY printing company to do so. While there I found several issues, a big one was the press was ‘doubling’ in the Magenta Unit - I called and asked...

    Disappearing dot gains?

I’m thinking something in the RiP got corrupted. . . Maybe reset it & re-liberalize. Press ALWAYS gain - seldom sharpen. I have the RiP “wanted” numbers if that helps. Dan 412.889.7643

    Grey Balance at Press

I have instructions on how to achieve Grey Balance at press. This will work for single, 2-color, & 4-color presses. It's designed for people who can't afford, or don't have the tools necessary, for G7 or other methods. I have density numbers for Coated and Uncoated as well as the "wanted" RIP...

    Felix Brunner Items-

Here's an item I wrote several years ago and the responses. The standard deviation of a press is + or - 2%. That 4% variance in any particular color will show a cast but if you keep the colors in 'balance' the 4% variance becomes only a 'light' or 'dark' variance - this difference we can live...

    tone value increase

TRUE but - 2 reasons - #1-I don't trust Creo or Kodak and I want to be sure I'm printing a 1-2-3% dot accurately! #2- When the bean counter up front decided to change plates all I need to do is linearize - curve stays the same! Oh, and by the way, on a previous post you thought on a negative...

    tone value increase

Here, try this and let me know how it works! 1-Print this tone scale with linear plates (attached). Use "Deer" poster for density reference Coated & Uncoated! 2-Measure dot area. 3-Enter "Wanted" values into rip (no one ever gives you them) (attached). 4-Print with new adjusted plates. Oh, you...

Trouble color matching blues & purples - offset CMYK, G7 methodology, GRACoL 2013

The purple colors are made from midtown (40-50-60%) areas of Mag/Cyan, they are the most difficult to control because of dot gain. i would measure the mid tone gain of your “good” profile sheets & compare the gain of your current sheets. You will have to add a color bar that contains Solid&50%...

Unable to achieve a flats seamless grey with CMYK

Another thought- compare several sheets, notice any ‘doubling’ or distortion of any of the dots? i had a similar problem with a 2-color screen job - it was dot shape - changing the tonality.
