    Plate storage

We used to have a rack at each press with a list of jobs in order of priority, and the plates stacked vertically in order of requirement.. At my current place of employment they get stacked haphazardly in the plate room. This results in irritating scratches and general damage (I kid you not, I...

    Standard makeready sheets

So, for example on a 10 color you allow 800 make ready sheets? I would consider that excessive on a late model fully auto press. Generally, (our presses are not auto, semi auto plate loading only, and manual profiling) we take one pull for rego, and 2 run downs of 100 sheets to ensure profile is...

    Swing arm gripper clearance

Nope. I mentioned that in my previous post, and that I only adjust it when running very heavy stock, and only if it interferes with the side lay pull. On the '00 model I run it's a 10mm spanner, with a tiny little stupid Allen key lock in the side.

    Swing arm gripper clearance

The cover lay is sometimes also referred to as the hood lay, and on the '00 Komori 40" I run they are small chrome covers that run from the head stops and effectively cover the first 5mm or so of the grip edge of the sheet, with the purpose being to stop the sheet from riding up over the head...

picking on 6/c 28 inch komori

Only on uncoated stocks, and only if you don't back the job up asap. Are you running the same ink/chemistry as you were on the Heidelbergs?? Or the same stocks? These things are more likely to cause picking than a press type.... May be worth checking you are not overpacked on your blankets...

    Standard makeready sheets

According to my production manager (bindery tradesman!!) one pull should suffice :)

    Light weight sheetfed stock

Keep your lateral blowers on minimum, even turn off the secondary ones, as minimal blast through lightweight stock is fairly critical. Keep air thru the sheet to a minimum and give the sheets some room to seperate, ie dont try to pin the sheet down with the fingers.. Drop your cover lays to...

    Ineptitude

And why would i not think i deserve a pay rise? I'm on call pretty much 24hrs, am versatile, have a lot of experience on a wide variety of presses, the price of EVERYTHING ELSE has risen dramatically over the last 24 months, and my workload has effectively doubled in the last 3 months. And a...

    Ineptitude

Mate i have got to agree with this!! With the recent GFC, a lot of mediocre, or just plain shithouse printers were culled out of the workforce, as employers offloaded unproductive units, so to speak. Unfortunately, this has lead to pay rate stagnation. I currently run a 40", with no assistant...

    Dealing with messy alternate shift?

Ok... so recently our shift manager fired our offsider, and it has been 2 months now and i cannot see a replacement coming soon, if at all. This has made life more difficult of course, running a 40" without an assistant is a big big job, and its not until they are gone that you realise how much...

so what will be the next new thing in the printing industry?

Alcohol/Drugs/Cigarettes. They are the next big thing in printing. Start up a shop sellin whiskey, valium, and smokes near a big printer... and you will win big. Hope this helps :)

what would you do if you werent printing

Totally agree with ya there mate! I remember when "tuning" your car was getting it to run well with the biggest Holley carb you could find.... and you did that by changing jets and mucking round with timing till it overpowered the tyres in top gear :) Now its laptops and Apexi hand controllers...

what would you do if you werent printing

You sound like your in a bit of a rut, and i know exactly how you feel! I'm just a little bit over doing the same shit every day......ok it might be different print jobs but its still the same ol' same ol' :( Every week i'm finding it a little harder to get motivated and really enjoy my job...

Where can I find a Job Description for a Sheetfed Second Pressman?

We call them offsider or assistant here in Australia.... but we put off the offsider that was day shift only on a 2 shift press just this week... It was more to do with a downturn on our mid size machinery that saw some printers standing around a fair bit during the day. So now we have no...

    uncontrollable water.. catchup and emulsifying

If your doser is giving you some issues, try taking it out of the loop if possible and manually mix your fount for a week or so, that will either give you a solution or eliminate a possibility. However, if the doser was the source of the problem all units, more than just one unit would be...

    uncontrollable water.. catchup and emulsifying

I agree with Al on this one, start with doing a full set on your rollers, and eliminate them from the equation as an issue. I would guess at undersize or poorly set rollers in both the water and inking train, and there is simply no way you will get a consistent run out of it. I recently had...

    mechanical ghosting
