    energy Independence

Cute advertisement. Anyway, installing a wind turbine on-site for a company at times is almost impossible. I can tell you within my own company, located in Massachusetts, the industrial park we are located within is tightly packed. There isn't much room for us to expand in terms of...

Interesting Question - How much of the paper you buy gets recycled?

Got numbers: 35% of the paper we buy ends up getting recycled. This is mainly because we are doing short run print jobs while having only offset printers. Small 2 color work can easily have up to 70-80% of the work recycled because of overs. I included all paper we order for production as...

Do Printers Believe in Continuous Improvement?

I can agree with many of the comments already made that the bottom line is being looked at more closely then any continuous improvement initiatives. The company I work for cut jobs, temporarily reduced pay and has instituted furlough days. However, there is a significant issue that I also wish...

Interesting Question - How much of the paper you buy gets recycled?

There is always waste in printing a job. Whether it be pre-press trimming, post-press trimming, overs and so on. I was curious as to see other printers paper recycled to paper bought ratio. I'm actually crunching these numbers for my own company and it looks like we end of recycling a...

Fulfillment Discussion - Handling and storage

@ Craig Yes, all the imprint Text and names are in black. Best solution would be a digital printer, however there is resistance within management to go that route on top of unavailable funds. The company has used only offset for a very long time. The viability of digital printers is still...

Fulfillment Discussion - Handling and storage

I believe its because of the cost associated with it. What happens is the job is first run on a 6C press. CMYK is first done then a 2nd black is used to add the client name/text. This is only done on the clients that have been designated for a specific amount of masters. I believe the cost...

Fulfillment Discussion - Handling and storage

Need some fresh ideas on a specific issue I've been tackling within our fulfillment department. This example is our largest account, so making it more efficient will help in multiple areas. Any advice on improvement would be helpful: My company has a huge order we do every summer. The deal...

    Profiles!

Wrong section of the forum, but anyway.... Multiple questions here and I will try to answer them as simply as I can. As having designer/pre-press experience in the past I always ask customers to convert files into CMYK before they send files to us. That way the customer has some expectation of...

    FSC certification

If you read the guidelines carefully, you don't have to designate a space devoted to certified paper. Its either "segregated" area or "clearly identifiable" labeling system. You can make an extra section for certified paper, but its not needed.

Paper and quality - How to differentiate?

As I expected: 1) Use what works 2) Use what people want 3) Use what gives the least amount of variability Thanks for the input. Next is to break down our 100+ so kinds of paper we have access to and get some general "pick and choose" kinds.

Kaizen Blitz at Business Stationery, LLC

Thanks David, good to hear about companies taking the initiative to find ways to improve the company. Small stuff like that make a big difference. Might not be immediately seen within the companies coffers, but mainly within the mindset of the workers. A lot of companies at this moment can't...

Paper and quality - How to differentiate?

If "suitability" is more appropriate, why are the prices for paper all over the place? For Example: (Numbers aren't exact, rounded for example sake) Neehah Paper Inc. 1) Classic Crest Cover 80lb Solar White - $120 dollars per 2000 packed carton vs. 2) Classic Crest Cover 110lb Solar...

Paper and quality - How to differentiate?

How can you tell a low quality paper from a high quality paper? What are the factors in determining the quality of a certain type of paper? Does GSM, Calipher, M-weight have anything to do with it? I assume Opacity does. I know this is materials 101 garble, but I gotta start somewhere :P

How do you deal with stress?

Stress breeds inefficiency when it comes to work. So I have a few pointers: 1) Leave the stress related to work at work 2) Do your job to the best of your ability 3) Learn to laugh at stupid management comments 4) Learn to listen, but then forget it all and do it the right way 5) Drink liquor...

    FSC certification

I hear ya, its not for everyone. Where my companies market is, what their concerns are and the type of customers we acquire it is a big thing. The paper merchants we also deal with feel its a big deal. Granted, paper is only one part of it. There is also power consumption, waste disposal...

    Carbon neutral?

I'm not offended at all. I have a different perspective that we should of started with from the beginning: Have enough kids to replace you. Yeah, I said it. One couple, two kids max. The issues that comes up is some people out there WANT MORE then two and people remarry and all that fun...

    FSC certification

Why is it important to be certified? Consumer recognition and characterization. Customers wish to understand what we, as printers, are doing with our business to create more environmentally sound practices. The certification, and logos, prove that we are involved in a process, larger then...

    Carbon neutral?

Ignorance is bliss huh? Wonder which side though..... Anyway, yes you are correct that high levels of CO2 help to create larger and thicker concentration of plants. What does that have to prove with your argument? We are coming out of an ice age, of course there was less CO2 because there...

    Carbon neutral?

Its not shortsightedness, just a misunderstanding on what you meant by living like our ancestors. I'm guilty of that all the time when speaking about religion, don't get me riled up on that stuff :P As you said, and your correct in this assumption, we created a society in which fossil fuels...
