A dying diode will draw too much power and trigger the -5V error. Also, I have had dirty optics also cause that error because it takes extra power to overcome the dirt.

Sonoras require a pretty strong beam. The ones we have set up on the 16 diode Screens are usually set to 95% on the power and 600 RPM on the drum.

You can use any 5 volt power supply with similar specs, but 9 times out of 10 the power supply is not bad, it's dirty optics.

Your best bet is to open up the right side door, take off the carriage end cover, and defeat the interlock then watch to see what the carriage is or isn't doing.
