    A New Opportunity

Concerning those that take advantage of the system to make money, I tell myself this so I don't get angry: The kind of personality and character it takes to not want to work to earn a living is the kind of person I don't want in my shop and wouldn't wish them on another employer.

Doubt with RAM on a New FFEI workflow installation

520MB is barely higher than 512MB. I would say you need more RAM, at least 1GB (1000MB).

    Large output digital press

There might be some obscure manufacturer out there that makes a digital press that can handle that size but I don't know of any. And by digital press, I assume you mean electrophotographic printing? I do know there are plenty of inkjet wide format machines that can easily handle that size. Like...

Award winning beer features a unique, attention-grabbing label

That's cool. I wonder how many labels they printed?

Who are your best/most spending customers?

Like you, I have found the best ones to be nonprofits and print brokers. When they are properly funded and your timing is good, new businesses can be great - logo design, apparel, promo products and direct is sometimes ordered in one shot. And then you have them for awhile. In general, someone...

93% of online responses are driven by direct mail

I just want to say that I am... surprised (ok, I really mean flabbergasted), to hear some printers dislike 'junk' mail so much. But I assume they mean, poorly targeted mail is thrown in the trash/recycle bin. Which is understandable.

How long does your company take

Does anybody track this? I would assume that very large shops with very expensive MIS systems probably do. But like everyone has said so far, it depends upon if any part is outsourced, highly customized, or just plain weird and difficult. Ninety percent of my quote requests come through email so...

    Pricing digital?

Ooops. Sorry about that jdr999. Printplanet doesn't keep me logged in anymore so whenever I visit, I forget to log in and check messages. I'll reply now...

Requests For Proposal - Good? Bad?

I have a lot to say about RFQs but it can easily be summed up as jrsc said, 'I hate RFQs'. Like Communism, RFQs are good in theory. But in practice? Too easily corruptible. Since we (us printers) have different capabilities it would make sense that the lowest bid with the best service would...

    Dumb idea?

Yes, you should. You know why? Because web developers offer printing services! They make a bunch of money building a website (because their only overhead is a computer and their time) and then when their customer asks for business cards, they go to one of those cheap online trade shops and give...

    Bulk Mail Training

Like Craig said, start small. The only part of what he said I may disagree with is the mailing software unless you have that $2,000 to give them, there are less expensive (and less robust) presort software out there like Postage Saver. Another good resource is a list broker like Mailers Haven...

    Mailers Haven - Any Feedback?

We use EZ24x7 by AES Systems. I can give you a contact name. We just started using it because it does NCOA. Previously, we've used BM-Win Plus and Postage Saver. Neither of which does NCOA (but they are very inexpensive) which is why we used Mailers Haven. We've tried the USPS SMB tool once but...

    Mailers Haven - Any Feedback?

I use Mailers Haven. Love 'em! They are very knowledgeable and fast - mail lists and NCOA takes a few hours. Often times, the NCOA comes back within minutes. You don't do any presorting? Do you have a permit? I do all of it in-house as there is affordable software out there for us small mailers.

    Which wide format to buy

If you are printing mostly outdoor signage, don't get the Canon. It's aqueous ink NEEDS to be laminated if you want it to last longer than 3 months. From what I understand, even solvent printers laminate everything except banners. I run a Canon. It's great for the posters and trade show displays...

    Career Switch

I actually enjoy plumbing. Sometimes I joke that when things go to the crapper (pun intended) and I lose the shop, I'm going to become a plumber. Hate electrical work though. When we remodeled our bathroom, I had a lot of fun crawling under the house and installing PVC and copper pipe. The...

    Pricing digital?

"This is Celestial One responding to your distress call. Do you copy?" (And then my plane crashes because I have no dea what I'm doing.) Oh god, I'm such a dork. Anyway, seriously, do you study voodoo magic? Because that is what print pricing is. "...Where it should be..." depends upon your...

    Bulk Mailing Minimums...

Does that work for first class only or can you apply for standard class minimum exemption as well?

Difference between Production Printer and Office Copier?

Oh, man you just opened up a can of worms. Vendors and printers have different qualifications for 'production level'. It's like saying, is that a forest or just a bunch of trees? I'll start with my definition - any machine that produces jobs that you are paid to do. Now that I think about that...

    Reflecting the Customer

    Cutting products to size.

New cutters don't come with a conversion chart attached to the front of the machine? Man, with all the features they come with now and the price you pay, you'd think they could include a two dollar chart. We still measure the crop marks with a ruler and look at the conversion chart if it's a...
