    Creative Cloud thoughts

I totally agree, it's going to be a train wreck for years to come. It really seems as if Adobe made this decision without any regard for our industry and what we have to deal with on a daily basis to keep clients happy & production moving efficiently. Sure, designers, photographers & the rest...

Sounds like as good to go as if you'd be opening an IDML files saved down from CS6/5 etc. Still dangerous, but certainly possible.

If only the Print Industry had a governing body or powerful group that could do the same for us.

    Mythbusting! (A bit of fun)

"I'm so good at using Micro$oft Word and Publisher, learning InDesign won't be a problem." Skip to a week later. "What do you mean I need the images and fonts? Micro$soft doesn't do that!!"

    Xante Ilumina 502 Envelope Press

Interesting, I actually recall Xanté telling us to bend some pins to move the drum basket away from the paper path, to alleviate smudging on certain stocks. I'll ask around & see if anybody made that "adjustment" or not - thanks!

    Xante Ilumina 502 Envelope Press

One more to add to the Not So Good list - misregistration of colors. I've got a 2c logo we finally nailed the build down on, but the cyan is hanging and there's NO way to shift it on the machine. It has an Auto-Calibration setting for Color Registration, but it really isn't helping.

    Xante Ilumina 502 Envelope Press

We've had an Illumina GS installed since end of last year, it's basically been used for non-variable envelope jobs. (I know they advertise that it can do sheets up to 47" or something but that wasn't ever our intended use.) Here are some observations: The Good: •*Handles most stocks well...

    Everything must go!!!

Auction is imminent, Thursday the 30th of August. Looks like it's online bidding only, but shop walk-through days are Tuesday the 28th & Wed the 29th to preview the equipment. There's a list with images & downloadable PDF with images at that link. Happy shopping.

Canon 7010 and GPA Perm Label Stock

We've got a fairly short run to get onto this GPA 90# 2 Mil Clear Poly Permanent material through a Canon 7010VP and it is NOT happy. Can't find a stock description through the internal database on the press that matches this, so we had it spec'd as 80# Gloss Cover (not my idea!) and it will run...

    Everything must go!!!

Seems our plant is shutting down production at the end of July - next Tuesday to be exact. My understanding is, anything not sold independently SOON will be auctioned off at the end of August by the bank. Anybody looking to pick up equipment, feel free to PM me here & I'll put you in touch with...

JLT files - Clarification on Scaling objects and embed elements

Hard to say, probably jut finding the best way they knew how. I've done some pretty "questionable" things to get jobs to press over the years too. I do not, aside from the built-in Preview panel but that's really only good for text. SmartStream is a pretty basic tool particularly when you start...

JLT files - Clarification on Scaling objects and embed elements

I've used SmartStream for variable work, although not for variable images before, but if it behaves anything like the other similar tools, the scaling of a given variable image is handled by SmartStream, not InDesign natively. And even if you could scale the pieces based on a Rule from one...

    Heat Exhaustion

Somewhat, I can still feel a fair amount of heat & smell that pleasant "plastic melting" scent when we're running for a few hours at a time but I'd imagine without those vents it'd be a lot worse. Oh, some of the Canon techs have tried to tell us it will "negatively impact the effective...

    Prepress Employee Test

Just make one tailored to your work environment. I'd bet there are a few "problem jobs" lurking around you could throw at prospective employees to see if they catch and/or fix common issues. Pepper it with a few Q&A type of entries and Bob's yer uncle!
