Have you benefitted from the recent economic uptick!

401K is up 100K since the inauguration. New tax brackets should put more in my check soon.

Can a Digital Press produce plates on synthetic media for use on an Offset Press?

Why not just skip the plates and print it digitally?

Can a Digital Press produce plates on synthetic media for use on an Offset Press?

Interesting concept. Being a screen printer, I wonder if you could digitally print a separation and shoot a screen from it? Hmmm....

    Barco Megasetter repair

We still have a mid 90's vintage Megasetter plus. We are looking for someone to service it in the event it goes down. Esko discontinued supporting it a year ago. Anyone still using these?

    Giclée Workflows

What Gordo said. The resulting inkjet will NEVER match the look and feel of oil on canvas-there has to be a trade off. The artist is so intimately connected to their creation that they are seldom happy with the results. My situation was unique in that we were an offset printer whose Epsons were...

    Giclée Workflows

I believe it was a ColorGate-that was 6 years ago-I'm sure the process has evolved. I did work with fine art paper with little success. Unless it is certified for the inks you are using it can be a nightmare. The ink either soaked in and looked blurry or the ink literally ran off the sheet and...

    Giclée Workflows

DYP -that's an odd response, bordering on disrespectful. I have been involved in producing them in limited runs. Epson has a number of canvas based stocks that have coatings applied with various levels of sheen to accept the printer ink. The artist's painting is scanned or digitally photographed...

Converting 16-bit to 8-bit for printing - yes?

16 bit images are overkill for an offset press. We typically don't convert to 8 bit unless the file sizes get too huge. A 16 bit image is twice the size of an 8 bit with no discernible increase in quality.

    Settle a bet

It was theorized that the slower speed of the head across the drum to achieve 5080 and the extended period the imagesetter spun at full speed, as well as the length of time the laser was on put undue stress on the old girl. You think not?

    Settle a bet

We have a vintage Barco imagesetter that we beat like a rented mule. It has been postulated that if we run certain projects at the max resolution of 5080 we are putting undue strain on the unit. These projects do require the max res, but it was suggested that in the interest of the longevity of...

    Composite film

    Composite film

Is anyone aware of a way to create a composite film of all inks on a project in Automation Engine? The film positive is used on press to check content. I've created a task that converts the file to grayscale which works but is not as straightforward as I would like.

Opacity masks in Illustrator and Esko

Danny, thanks for taking a whack at it. I hadn't thought of eliminating the shapes in 396 altogether and just overprinting the black-very nice!

Opacity masks in Illustrator and Esko

Opacity masks always give me a hard time-back in the day I would just create a gradient and set it to multiply and move on. Now with the ability to fade to 0% of a color the files seem more confusing. Probably just old age. I've attached a customer supplied file that is giving me a problem. I...

    Direct to Screen

Mainly the automotive and appliance industry. Graphics are screened first surface and or second surface, coatings applied and then formed all while compensating for the distortions in the forming process. Extremely high resolution is required, 2000 to 4000 dpi is typical with some projects...

    Direct to Screen

Not sure where to post this since there are so few of us out there. We are an industrial screen printer, printing on vinyl and plastic which is then molded and formed. We are contemplating moving our process from a film based imagesetter to Direct to Screen technology. I was hoping those of you...

Printing Evolution - Thirty Years Past to Present

Joe you just wrote my prepress life story-amazing how similar my experience was. I remember back in the late 80's we got our first Apple Macintosh and a Linotronic 330. Within a year we had let go 19 strippers. I agree that change is fun and exciting-it keeps us sharp. I actually got final...

Printing Evolution - Thirty Years Past to Present

Boys, boys or should I say geezers? I've been following this salty thread and everyone seems to be senior members. That is the real problem we are facing (yes, I'm a fossil as well). We can't get any young bucks who want to do this for a living. I'm afraid much of this knowledge will be lost as...
