We have a vintage Barco imagesetter that we beat like a rented mule. It has been postulated that if we run certain projects at the max resolution of 5080 we are putting undue strain on the unit. These projects do require the max res, but it was suggested that in the interest of the longevity of the unit we avoid running them. Our typical jobs require a resolution of 2000-2540. Thoughts/theories?

The only strain I see is on the rip and the communication hardware/software, not on the imagesetter.

It was theorized that the slower speed of the head across the drum to achieve 5080 and the extended period the imagesetter spun at full speed, as well as the length of time the laser was on put undue stress on the old girl. You think not?

No, I don't think so.
The Barco seems VERY solidly built hardware-wise.
Perhaps use a conservative combination of laser intensity v. drum rotation speed.
