    Stitching remittance envelopes

I was poking around and noticed this. We have not found a way to do this, either. We hand-feed at the front of the chain, which is a pain and is slow.

Irish Government Purchase Komori Press that didn't fit

If you read the news story, it's truly pathetic. The very first thing that pops out at me is that the press had to fit in a space 2.5m high, and it's a full 2.1m high. Would ya think pressman would find it delightful to rap his knuckles on the ceiling every time he raised the gate to change a...

    Faint images

I going to hazard a guess: the image is longer than the circumference of at least one forme roller or of the oscillator roller. You MIGHT be able to fix this with a "jumbo" oscillator roller. If the problem is what I think it is, that is the only way out that I think of.

Müller Martini 1890.0199 Punching Device (DSS) instructions needed, etc.

We have this unit for one of our booklet stitchers and would really like to get it operating. The unit punches booklets during the bookletmaking process, to deliver saddlestitched booklets that can be inserted into ring binders. Does anyone have operation and setup instructions for it? (We DO...

    Dye sub color woes

Just a fast reminder about redeveloping scenarios: there will always be variance in measurements. That's the root of the concept of "standard error" in statistics. It is much easier and much more predictable (and productive) to shoot one bird than to try to get two birds to line up so that you...

Anderson & Vreeland Represents Xeikon in North America

I would love to run Xeikons. The biggest obstacle to our purchase of their machines has always been the fact that it's hard to find job-appropriate paper in rolls. As long as fine paper on rolls is on allotment, we'll simply sigh and keep using other ways. Long live free enterprise.

    Label Calculator

It seems a lot of equipment purchases happen this way, especially by smaller print shops getting used equipment at a windfall from a debtor. Be that as it may, the best thing to do in such a situation is: see how many linear feet/meters this press can produce per hour, come up with a good set...

    Archival paper needed

Depending on what you want... almost any decent printing paper will work. (Horrors! The truth! Marketing be da--ed!) Paper about 30 years ago was still commonly being treated with acids in the pulp stage. Acids speed up the oxidation of paper. People were freaking out about their beautiful...

    Choosing the paper surface side

Thanks, Gordo. I saw a job like that less than 6 months ago. Printed on a cheap-cheap sheet and it looked like a silkscreen had been laid on top at an angle; same image printed on the other side of the sheet nicely. We switched to a different (more costly) sheet and everything smoothed out...

    Legality of Logo...

I am not a lawyer, although I attended law school. Copyright and trademarks are two very different legal areas. If the poster art is not created by Taco Bell (or its ad agency, etc.) and you are not using it to sell food or commit any kind of fraud, you are almost certainly not infringing on...

Digital copier verses digital offset press

Definitely you should look at the "trade printer" option if you can find one whom you can trust. Litho press shops are true bargain centers if you're running 5M or more impressions per side and can gang up several jobs on a press sheet. Think of a "13x19 click charge" equivalent of less than...

    Ridiculous Quotes

As always: Caveat emptor. An offset price in the $15K-$20K range is reasonable trade market. The digital price of $56K is either wishful thinking, mental laziness, or something else for the seller. $4K for clicks and paper as incremental supply costs is reasonable, but unrealistic for either...

    Label printing advice

Any knowledgable printer would cut you a far finer deal for an order of 50,000 labels than for 5,000. I would imagine you could easily find someone to produce 6,000 labels (500 sheets of 12 labels each) for about €300. For 60,000 you'd probably pay about €1,000. I would advise: do NOT get a...

    Gassing off concerns

Take her to a reputable specialist in allergies and upper respiratory illness. A GOOD one. And make sure you tell exactly what the situation is. We are dealing with chemicals in the printing trade and every person is different in his severity of reaction to exposure to chemicals. The one thing...

    Total Boxes required with weights

I use a spreadsheet based on this layout. I am not permitted to share the code, but it would be easy to replicate. Seems to work. Input in the yellow boxes, output in the orange boxes. (Unreduced fraction is just for my quick figuring.) Book thickness and qty per box...
