    Hot Folders

Well, there is talk of getting rid of the server that the hot folder and program currently reside on. We maybe moving everything to our Mac server, that may solve the problem. However, prepress is reluctant to open the server to the company-wide network - i can't say i blame them either. They...

    Hot Folders

It is mounted via SMB. That is the only way we could get it to connect with the Windows server. We mounted the hot folder as a volume - is this the correct way to do it? This is how the main prepress guru here said it should work. But he is also at a loss of why the Mac's won't consume the file...

    Hot Folders

I am having an issue with a hot folder that I do not understand. We have a hot folder set up for our MIS to dump an xml file to for a layout program. When PC's read from the hot folder, the file is "consumed", or taken out of the folder. However, when a Mac reads from this folder, the file stays...

What form of printing is best for art book quality, high-gloss magazines?

Definitely offset - FM screen. The quality of digital printing has increased, and in most cases looks very good. But for your application, wanting the best color and photo-reproduction - offset is the way to go. As khasmir stated, a book on a digital press with a 5000 print qty, the cost...

    Polar-Mohr Cutter Question

We have 2 115-EMC Polar cutters. On these, there is a black knob that is on top of the backgauge that adjusts the "pitch". If you are standing at the back of the machine, loosen the left-hand "ratchet" and turn the knob to adjust. I am not sure which direction leans the back gauge forward or...

    Perfect Binding question

I know this is coming in a little bit late, but the answer on the printing(production) side is pretty simple. We can set our imposition software to not allow bleed on the spine, even if there is bleed included on the supplied file. Like you said, you would pretty much have to flatten the spine...

    Perfect Binder suggestions

one thing to think about - PUR adhesive vs. Regular book adhesive. If you are never going to bind coated stock - regular will be fine. But if you plan on have coated book, look into PUR. We do not have a binder in house, but have a few around the area that we do business with.

    Metrix or Preps

Re: Metrix or Preps T - we use Rampge here, so I am not sure about how Nexus works. In talking with our prep operators, they edit the colors once the sig is rip'ed. we use a 6C color bar - 4c/p + 2 spots. When they edit the colors, they tell the rip to "map to" spot 1, spot 2 or to not use the...

    Metrix or Preps

Re: Metrix or Preps Well, from my screen name you can guess my pick. Metrix all the way. While right now we are still exporting some templates out of Metrix into Preps, that will soon change very drastically. If your MIS and RIP are jdf capable, then Metrix is the way to go. Once my company...

    who plans your jobs?

Re: who plans your jobs? I am *the* job planner at our company. This used to be a team of 4-5 people who did all of the estimates and tag-teamed on getting the orders processed once they were awarded. Management has since broken us up - 4 members of the "marketing team", who's primary function...

4-up die line for a #10 converted envelope

Re: 4-up die line for a #10 converted envelope Here is one for 8up on 25 x 38. i would just bust it in half and maybe invert(?) to keep the guide/gripper the same (if you are using operator guide). I only have this one and a 6up on 23 x 35. good luck.

    Automated Workflow

Re: Automated Workflow We are using ePace. We switched over from PSI last year. From what management tells me, PSI was not quite ready for "automation/web to print" type stuff at the time. They did not want to wait on the upgrades.

    Automated Workflow

Re: Automated Workflow Well......... provided the files actually do come in *ready to print*, we are really close to having a true automation. The first thing that has to happen is domebody has to build the files correctly. The company i work for is on the cusp of working all of this out...

    resistance to new technologies/workflows

Re: resistance to new technologies/workflows We are not actually asking these guys to learn how to use Metrix - yet. right now i am planning the the job and either exporting a preps template(so they do not have to back and recreate what I am looking for), or export the jdf imposition. The jdf...

    resistance to new technologies/workflows

Re: resistance to new technologies/workflows The comment about "spoiling" our customer by making all changes wasn't meant to sound as negative as it came out. We do get paid for *some* of the changes. The problems there are sales reps who automatically do not want to change the customer any...

    resistance to new technologies/workflows

Re: resistance to new technologies/workflows monkey - I'm not an evil genius, I just play one at a print shop. Man, I feel like that everyday. It seems there is constantly a line outside my door of people asking "How did you do that?" or "How does this work?". It is not rocket science!

    resistance to new technologies/workflows

Hello all, I am the production planner at our plant. Currently trying to learn the prepress world. I have been researching pdf workflows and jdf. I have found some things I believe to be really cool, but am having a difficult time getting the gurus to get on board with it. These guys are really...
