    Variable Data Printing

It has one significant limitation: price. Our quote from Xerox for a useable setup with the required maintenance agreement was just shy of $10,000. And that was as part of a bundle with a new machine (Docucolor 5000 AP). Needless to say, out of the ballpark for a small shop.

Matching Spot Colors on Colored Stock?

Recently, as a prepress person, I've come across jobs where I was asked to recreate parts of a paper system originally printed in spot colors on a stock with some form of color to it. Usually something like a brown-cast paper with specks in it. The customers had no idea what the spot color...

    Variable Data Printing

If DesignMerge is built as a plug-in for InDesign, how does it get around the limitations of InDesign documents? Namely that as the number of text blocks, fields of data and numbers of records in a merge increase, there appears to be an exponential rate at which InDesign slows down and...

Apple screwed the pooch (OS 10.6.3 update)

I've been chatting with an Apple employee about that, and he's of the consensus that's an Adobe issue probably related to software authentication checks. He said re-serializing replaced logic boards wasn't something Apple did as a matter of course until recently. My guess is Adobe with CS3 was...

Apple screwed the pooch (OS 10.6.3 update)

For what it's worth, we run predominantly 10.6.3 and have users using both CS3 and CS4 with no problems. As far as I can tell, Apple didn't screw any pooch here. As far as SL for prepress work in general, there's no way I would go back. Yeah, it took a little work to reconfigure our old...

    Variable Data Printing

We're going through some growth in providing variable data print, and we're finding more and more projects that completely outstrip Indesign's simple VDP capabilities. We're definitely hitting the 9,999 page limit in Indesign, as well as its propensity to bog down and often crash with increasing...

Acro 9 Pro no longer converts color?

I am not ruling out a specific problem with something on my machine BUT... I have relied on the Convert Colors (Advanced -> Print Production) function for a couple years in Acrobat 8 and now 9. Concurrent to the update to Acrobat Pro 9.1.1, I have lost the ability to convert colors using any...

    Adobe Acrobat 8 hangs

Is your copy of Pitstop fully updated? I can't remember the versions associated with 7. I am on version 8 update 5. Also, are you running lots of fonts on these machines? If so, Acrobat 8 and 9 (and maybe earlier) will hang starting 10-15 seconds after launch and appear to hang for a while as...

    advice needed please!

I always thought it would be fun (in a geeky work sort of way) to train a webcam on "analog" scheduling boards so other users in the plant could view an internal website to see the board without getting up to look. :D

    advice needed please!

We're about to start using Printsmith's Scheduler. We have used PS for years, and had the scheduling module, too. Only recently we've started to get serious with it since booking on the presses has become more critical. Unfortunately I don't know many details yet, nor do I have any feedback on...

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

$2,519? That's extremely steep. And it's an upgrade. $3,149 for the full version. That's at least two licenses for CS4. They are not aiming this at a smallish printshop like ours, obviously.

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

Also, is there any apparent difference between how the Hoeffler faces are made (ie., number of files, extension types, etc.) and the Adobe fonts? Are they all Type 1? TT? OT?

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

Well, sounds like you have a very workable answer, if not ideal. At least you don't have to scrap Pitstop. Can you turn those fonts on after launching Acro, and does it see them and behave?

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

Well, does seem to be a correlation between the number of fonts you have open and the length of time it takes Acro+Pitstop to launch. I was looking through Pitstop's preferences to see if there is any setting that has it pre-cache fonts or something, but don't see anything relevant. Doesn't...

Sweet! Good to know some problems are reliably cross-platform. :D

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

Hmm, sorry... no clue what Vista even looks like, let alone how to troubleshoot such things as fonts, caches and preferences on it. But for my money it would be worth a call to Enfocus to deal with that. As many times as I use Acro in a day, that delay would add to real loss of revenue.

Pitstop causing Acrobat to take ~5 minutes to start up

Wow... I don't have this problem whatsoever. Acrobat 8.1.2 Mac + Pitstop starts in 5-7 seconds. I use a quad-core Intel Mac with 10.5.5. You didn't mention what platform you were on, but I would recommend standard cache and preference-killing maintenance for your operating system and the...

    G3 iMac shuts down

G3 iMac power issues G3 iMac power issues I dealt with lots of G3 iMacs (revs B through D) in their day, and nearly 100% of them had a specific failure after about 2 years resulting in symptoms similar to what you are seeing. The power-analog-video board (PAV board) fails and causes at first...
