    One sided laminators - experience?

Thanks for the feedback. We've been looking at the Foliant 400T or S - do you think this will provide a decent solution for lower volumes?

    Direct Smile

If you have some folks there who are good with Photoshop it should be very quick. Most of the work with DirectSmile is creating motifs with image backgrounds and then using layering actions similar to Photoshop. Once the motif is set - then it's on to the VDP software. They also have an...

    Konica 1050 Coarse Halftones

A color device like the 250 will produce better halftones than the b/w only 1050. Of course, they probably cost 3x as much per page, but will look better. When we need high-resolution screens on a large b/w job we send out to a Kodak Digimaster or Xerox Nuvera - they both do nice jobs.

Pre-Printed Offset Covers / What digital equipment to use?

Hopefully the inks are laser safe as well - the only way to tell is to run some. The term "laser safe" means different things to different mfrs.

    Buying a Xerox 700

Gracol 7 is a workflow, not a download. It's nice to feel the love between the vendors who compete against each other for the same business.

    VDP Marketing Ideas?

DirectSmile can get expensive and they charge a "smiley" fee for each image generated. If you like this sort of thing, check out Directype. They do similar and have recently dropped their price to $399 euros with 150 free motifs for download. Great pricing and no per image charges...

New Digital Device and VDP Software Advice

I think you need to consider what applications/products/services you want to offer before you start selecting software. "VDP" is a broad term that can mean many things - the software you have now is a nice plug in that can do a lot - why do you want to change? Do you want to add image...

Thanks, I found some Kodak info that showed not only gloss, but a raised print effect in selected text or image areas.

    Digital Spot Varnishing?

We got some print samples from a shop we use with a Canon imagePRESS that had spot varnishing that the shop said was done all in-line on the printer. I didn't know you could do this with a digital device. Some of it looked pretty cool - has anyone done jobs on this printer? Were you able to...

Xerox 8000 too expensive? While Canon 7000 seems right.

The shop we used has a Xerox 8000 and says the UV supplies they use are a specific mix to the Xerox products. Apparently each brand of digital press has a mix or formula that works best with their toner makeup. We were told that for the heavy toner coverage job we had the fuser oil could make...

Xerox 8000 too expensive? While Canon 7000 seems right.

The majority of our brochures and newsletters are trimmed to letter size - probably 90%. Any time we can get 2-up or multiple up we'll go offline of course for lower rates from where we send the job. The big worry with us is we have variable data within the newsletter and no matter how good...

    Traditional Offset to Digital Sales

We are a small digital shop and outsource offset, with digital at about 65% of print sales and offset at about 25%. We are trending toward a higher % of digital work, trying to find higher margin jobs with personalization and variable data. The hunt continues:) I just read that: "The Printing...
