Rough Edge aka "Faux Deckle" edges

I could be wrong but the most common way this is achieved is from hand making paper. I've done it and when you make the paper in a wooden frame, the edge is naturally a deckle edge. I've never seen it mass produced but that doesn't mean it isn't done. I'm sure you can find a hand "deckle edge"...

    Laminating book covers

Interesting discussion. When laminating perfect bound book covers, I would never laminate both sides. If laminating at all, we intentionally put a down-curl on the sheet (using a decurling bar) so the cover curves in towards the book. UV is an option but not ideal if you want a book to last a...

More wavy paper problems to solve

I saw this happen before. What they did to solve this was take the done books after binding, placed on a pallet, put a pallet on top and strap the books under pressure for 24 hours. This way during the aclimation process the pages stayed flat.

8, 16 & 18 page signature folding and cross grain binding

Yes, we have a few hundred pallets over here of various paper types and they're all long grain.

8, 16 & 18 page signature folding and cross grain binding

As I've seen it, most paper is long grain. So, a 28x40" inch press sheet will have the grain direction running in the 40 inch. Given a 8.5 x 11 final product size (or similar), when folding this down to a standard 16 page cross section fold, the signature ends up being cross grain. This doesn't...

    Folding Advice

Yep. Those folds are pretty easy. Change overs for those will likely take about 5 minutes. This is a link to a machine that is pretty similar (except the delivery and size format) to my machine. Not saying that you should get that but that's what I use...

Hydraulic Cutter advice- Baum/Polar or Challenge?

I've only used Polar and they've been relatively problem free. Sounds like you don't have a lot of work for them so you could get a pretty bare bones one. We've run our cutters all day for years and they still work fine. Only issue is that parts get harder to come by as the years go by but...

    Folding Advice

It's all a matter of what you need. I have a Heidelberg Stahl from 2008 and it still runs great. I went to Drupa and didn't see anything life changing from what I have now. We have a three station round continous feeder and run alot of different sizes every day. So if you have many different set...

Edge chipping on perfect bound books

I've done extensive testing on this issue. We are usually using 80lb cover and tested several different things. The main variable we found to produce a change in this issue is the paper itself. We tried pre-slitter knives, different presses, new blades, etc. For example, when we switched from...

    Lamination Bubbling

I have an issue after sheets have gone through my Autobond laminator and then the Sakurai UV coater. If the sheets are then scored we run into an issue where the laminate seperates from the sheet in the area that it was scored. I've consulted with D&K, Nobelus and Deprosa but they haven't been...
