Abrasion standards for Packaging

Hi all,

What guidelines do you use for testing ink and coating rub performance for printed packaging? Thus far, I can't identify if there is an industry standard or guideline using D5264 testing parameters.

Standard papers used are LithoLam, SBS (c1s) and CCNB (Grayback) board stock.

We want to use the testing methods called out in ASTM D5264 - 98(2004) Standard Practice for Abrasion Resistance of Printed Materials by the Sutherland Rub Tester. The challenge is identifying a decent starting point from which to measure against. It would be best to follow an industry standard to avoid overly stringent performance requirements that increases costs unnecessarily.

Is there a formula that can be used based on the weight of the package? For example:
  • 25 rubs x "X" lbs @ 4 lbs
Or even a standard everyone uses for UV, aqueous & varnishes for example:
  • UV = 300 rubs @ 4lbs
  • Aqueous = 100 rubs @ 4lbs
  • Varnish = 50 rubs @ 4lbs
