Adobe Illustrator select and move issue

For some reason in Illustrator CS5 I no longer have the ability to select a graphic and then click on and hold with mouse and move, when I move the mouse it draws a marquee. Only way I can move the graphic is using x y coordinates and cursor arrows which is rubbish. This is something that has suddenly just started in the last week. Tried the test file on other machines and its no problem and can move without issue, even tried both wired and wireless mice as a last resort. Me now stuck.

Anybody had this issue and found the way of getting round it, been through the preferences also but without success. Anyone?

Thanks

What do you mean by "been through the preferences"?

You have looked at them or tried editing settings?

Or do you mean that you have trashed the preference file for Illustrator?

Are you on Win or Mac OS?

The software preferences in drop down menu, wondered if there was anything in there, like you can change units a type etc. Not trashed anything and am on Mac OS platform. Cheers

Go back to your 'Preferences' and make sure that 'Object Selection by Path Only' is unticked in 'Selection & Anchor Display'.
Obviously if you have unfilled objects they can only be selected/moved by path anyway.
