Wow, it can’t get any worse than it is right now. The international takeover / merger between KW Doggett and BJ Ball is already having a negative impact on our industry. As it stands in Australia at the moment, we now have only 2 large paper suppliers, Spicers and the new BJ Ball / KW Doggett entity. Redundancies have begun and long standing well qualified people are being told that they are no longer required. Aside from this, if either entity decides to start a price war, we could end up with a single paper supplier, which will mean that there is no competition and paper prices could escalate in the future.
To protect ourselves, we should give careful consideration to spreading our paper purchases between the two entities to ensure that each company continues to trade. As individual printing businesses, we don’t have much influence, however, as an industry standing together we are a force to be reckoned with.
