Barcode Verification software

Hi All,

I am looking for a software solution to integrate barcode checks for book covers in my prepress workflow. The software tool should be able to check the barcode readability against standards and if it can let me edit these standards, that would be even better.

Also looking to integrate it using a script of some sort so its all automated. Any suggestions ? Mac or Windows platform is fine

Hi Snatch,

Our FirstPROOF product (a virtual pre-press soft-proofing product) contains a BarCode Measurement Tool. This allows you to proof the barcode for correctness after you've ripped it and produced your plate data (TIFF, LEN or PGB files).

With it you can read many types of bar codes:
a) EAN-13
b) EAN-8
c) EAN-128
d) ISBN
e) ITF-14
f) JAN
g) UPC-A
h) UPC-E

When we implemented it, we followed the ISO/IEC 15426-1:2006(E) standard for barcode verifier conformance. As well as reading the actual barcode, we also calculate the BWR (Bar Width Reduction) factor that was applied and also report the Size (percentage vs standard size).

A lot of our customers currently use it in their pre-press workflow as part of their (post rip soft) proofing checks to verify correctness. If you want to try it out, you can download FirstPROOF from our web site and give it a go (will run in Demo Mode for 28 days). It's not automated though, requiring a couple of clicks to apply the tool, but as part of a general proof, that's not too onerous.

Any completely automated solutions?

I would like to drop files into a folder for batch processing. Want the program to scan the cover for the barcode. Check it for user defined attributes and output a report in preferably XML.
