We are about ready to nget our Canon IPF 8000 up and running and do jobs for pay
Our aim is to do fine art repro and something a little less challenging to bring in new clients/sources of income.
As far as paper stocks go, which papers are the best bet for different markets?
When someone wants a photo reproduced, any tips on good / economical glossy film paper? Canvas?
Any /all info, including what to charge for 24x36" would be appreciated. Thanks,
Thanks,
David

You may get some ideas on media types and applications here (I am not suggesting that you should or should not purchase Kodak wide format media, just that this could be used as a resource for exploring different media types):

KODAK Wide-Format Inkjet Media - Kodak Graphic Communications Group

You can download the material data sheets in PDF format, these files list intended use, printer settings and many other details.

For photographic enlargements or framing, I would recommend a "lustre" paper, which has a subtle texture on the surface. Lustre provides fingerprint resistance similar to matte media with a gamut very close to gloss media, without the problems associated with gloss. Heavy weights over 250 gsm are generally considered premium, while weights under say 200 gsm are generally economy stocks.

It really depends on the end use, your printer's ink technology (pigment, dye) and other factors. You should be able to find many websites competing in this area of pro photographic and exhibition repro, display graphics, signage etc. You will then get a feeling for what the target market is looking for in a supplier, what media is common for that market, pricing etc.

As for what you should be charging...

From an estimating/MIS point of view - you should be recovering your costs (capital investment, running costs, wages, media, ink, outwork etc) + making a profit - while at the same time being competitive in the market.
