CIP3/CIP4 technology for bindery equipment

Anybody out there using CIP for their cutters or folders or anything. Curious. The company we merged with has a big Polar with CIP4 and are not using. We swear by the pre inking software on the press using CIP3. Just curious if anybody is using it and if there are any pros or cons.
 
Curious to hear the responses to this. I believe this is something that people ask for, but less than 1% use in any capacity (with cutters).

Actually it works real well, but where are you getting your JDF from. One suggestion, Metrix by LithoTechnics.

You're right: JDF is not widely implemented in postpress despite the bindery being one of the final frontiers for digital efficiency in print production workflows. Part of this is cultural, part is the fact that most binderies have a range of legacy finishing gear of different vintage and capability. The Horizon pXnet Bindery Management System takes a different approach which supports JDF job setting data but does not depend on it, so all shops can manage their binderies effectively (with or without JDF): pXnet System - Standard Duplicating Machines Corporation
 
The reasons for not using it from the bindery supervisor is that the paper stretch on a 40 inch press makes the programs not work. When I have spent some time there I would like to see a program generated from the JDF. Seems to me if you dont have to create a 50 plus cut program from scratch it would be easier and less time consuming to make minor edits that would allow for tolerance difference.

It is the cats meow for gang run shops. A serious investment but I am not sure how long it would take for an ROI. It still comes down to a good Bindery Operator. And the programs are not always the best way to skin a cat. I myself would like to see some real world use response. I know of more shops who have the capability of it and do not use it more than the ones that actually have it in production.

Good point, we recognize that paper stretch can be a problem and offer a option to Prinect MetaDimenision called Paper Stretch Compensation. This is different then x and y changes for web growth, we actually use 9 points. See link on MetaDimension below:

Yes, we do have digital programming of Polar cutters. I remember an install I was at back in 1999, programming the cutters may even predate it.
