Does anyone use Version Cue?

Is anyone using Version Cue with Adobe's Creative Suite? I tried it for a few months with CS2 and didn't find it helpful. With the CS3 upgrade I didn't even bother to install it. I would like to hear from anyone who uses it regularly.

no never bothered with it - it has no ue to me as a packaging prepresser - we get a design in and proof, impose, etc etc

i can see a use in a design environment perhaps

So does anyone use version control?

There are times when the "creatives" decided to change a layout with the approval of the client, and they just save over the top of the old file. We then have to make them go back and re-work it to look the same as before. Re-proof it and get the clients approval again.

A version control system would allow us to get the previous revision, and hopefully identify the rogue "creative".

Any suggestions if no one is using Version Cue?

I simply add the date to the end of the file name. For example, filename_8.30.07.indd, for an Indesign file. This helps me avoid overwriting a previous version. I know it isn't a very creative solution, but it helps this "creative".

I was thinking the same thing. Is there an issue with the "creatives" that needs to be addressed, or are you looking at a more Administrator/User solution.

Version Cue will do nothing that can't be addressed by good file management and a strictly adhered to file naming convention. Personally, I think it's a subtle attack by Adobe (in conjunction with Bridge and the 'Adobe dialog box') to take the 'desk top' into their hands.

If you're not getting it right now, Version Cue is unlikely to help.

Yes, the adding the date to the end can work, it is inefficient as many near-identical copies of the documents have to be maintained. This requires a lot of self-discipline on the part of everyone, and often leads to mistakes.

As more prepress work is becoming outsourced an accurate method and record of the changes needs to be maintained. Simply renaming files is not enough.

Hi Jim,

I'm with you... upgraded to CS3 today and didn't even bother to install Version Cue. I have never used it at all... I think it might be handy in collaborative situations where a number of people are working on a project but since I'm the only prepress operator at my work I have no need for it. I must check with our Graphics department but to see if they have found a decent use for it...

Don't use it at all here (in Prepress). And, I don't know of any customers that use it either.

Version Cue is a quite nice tool we use in the design stage where the customer still did not decide if he wants the background in blue or in red and the text in white or whatever. There it makes sense because you have everything in one file and you save the final one only. This stops you from file names like final-final, final-blue, final-last and so on.
When it comes to prepress version cue is not a tool to be used because your rip might get crazy.
Its a designer tool, that's it.
