Foaming in Royce Tanks

I'm sure that anyone running a press with individual Royce tanks has experienced at times minor to major foaming?

Many things contribute such as tank size, turbulence, air, filters.

Has anyone had fairly good success in minimizing or controlling the foam and if so how??

Prisco sells an anti-foam additive called: de-foam

Posco sells one called: foam-aid

They both work very well.

We have had the foaming bad enough where it foams out and onto the floor. We use one capful of defoamer per 8 gallons of water and that usually knocks it down.

All of the foaming problems with royce circulators I've ever had were fixed by one or more of the following:

1) changing filter
2) making sure the alcomiser valve is open/closing correctly and its not letting air get sucked into the tank
3) open the valve coming off of the pump the whole way then adjusting water flow at the pan (or inline to the pan)
4) making sure that your moving as much water into the pan as you can with out it overflowing (so your not sucking air on the return line)
5) taking the bottom cover off of the pump impeller to make sure there's no globs blocking the send/return channels.
6) in the alcomiser, take off the hose connecting the measuring columb to the venturi where suction is made for the alcomiser.

Those little rocks of dried ink will get in there somewhere and block a hose or end up somewhere they shouldn't be. Taking everything apart and blowing it out and visually inspecting it to make sure there's no obstruction, then just tweeking the valves to find out where your getting max flow up to the pan with worrying about overflow... thats what kept mine foam free.

Another thing to check. Your blanket wash can actually cause foaming in your fount tank. If you have just perhaps, changed your blanket wash brand, especially if using a water miscible wash, the wash feedback to your chiller can cause foaming. Water miscible washes have a surfactant in them that allows water to temporarily mix with the wash. These surfactants are like a soap, and as such, can cause foaming. The same holds true for some plate cleaners.

To check, get a clear plastic (personal size, not a drum) water bottle. Fill it half full with freshly mixed fountain solution. put a few drops of your wash into it, and shake it vigorously. There may be some foam appear, but it should almost imediately dissapear. you can try this with plate cleaners, mrc's, etc. If you happen upon a combination, where the foam will not dissipate within 5 seconds or so, then youve likely found the cause of your foaming. ;-)
