I'm not sure if this is the best place for this post, so forgive me if it's in the wrong spot.

Anyway, we are a new startup print shop just finishing up construction, and are looking for a good air pump to run house air. I have most of the specs from our equipment manufacturers regarding how many PSIs are needed, but most didn't supply flow rate requirements. So far we're looking at about 450PSI and 20CFM needed, though that doesn't include all equipment.
What do you guys typically run for an air pump for your house air to run your equipment?

Verdant, did you really mean 450 psi? That seems high for a print shop.
 
I assume you meant 150 psi. what kind of equipment are you going to be running. I would not think you would need a continuous run rotary screw for one 5color 28 inch and a ctp with autoloader. in which case a three stage piston type with large receiver tank. 3 5color 40 inch and some other equipment 2 shifts you might need a kaeser or atlas copco 80 cfm with dryer and receiver tank
 
If I total up all of the equipment it's 450 psi, but I don't know if I need that 450 all at once. For example, our press needs 110 psi, two embosser/foilers that each need 90, a UV coater that needs 90 and some other various equipment totaling 60 psi. That's 440 total there, which I agree seems like a lot. The only flow rates I have are for the coater and press, using 10cfm and 8.5 respectively.

You don't have to add psi requirements. As long as you have a supply pressure that is higher than the highest pressure required by those individual pieces of equipment, then you should be alright. If you have a supply pressure of say 120 -140 psi, then that should be good for all your equipment. You would then need pressure regulators at each piece of equipment to be set to the lower required value.

You do have to add the total flow rates though. With flow rate values you do need to be careful about how they are stated. There is a difference between the flow rate at an elevated pressure and the flow rate at Standard pressure and temperature. Usually SCFM means cubic feet per minute at standard conditions (pressure and temperature).

Also the flow rate for a piece of equipment might only be for intermittent use or it might be for continuous use. It is important to know because if affect the size of the compressor needed and its accumulator tank.

Also be aware that when you generate compressed air, it can result in water coming out of the compressed air and possibly combining with oil from the compressor and producing muck. It is recommended to have water separators and filters before a piece of equipment.

You should be able to get the required info from your compressor supplier.
