I can try to help Dan, as a Kodak Master Distributor in Australia, KPS is one of the products that we sell and that I support.
Your friend could also ask for help on the Kodak GUA forums.
a friend has Kodak Proofing Software and the proofs are not predicting the press.
Is the press printing to a industry standard, such as PSO/Fogra39? Is the printer using a Kodak Matchprint Inkjet media? Is the Media Configuration in question calibrated? Is KPS using the appropriate ICC and Device Links for say Fogra39 and for the printer model, inks, paper and resolution in use? Are the input settings setup correctly? There are many variables...
Is your friend putting files into KPS directly from a Prinergy workflow using Direct (Workflow) Connectivity, or are they using Open Connectivity with Hot Folders or an IP printer?
With other RIPs I have previously applied a TVI correction to pull the colour back into the right shape - simple work around that generally gives me the results I am after.
I personally would make sure that everything else is correct first and I would hope not to go down the path of throwing in RIP curves in a hope to fix the colour or tone (which is not advised for proofing, only for non critical poster printing).
KPS has both 'ICC' and Device Link paths.
Customer is using Device Links which seem to have two parts, an ICC profile and a '.dvl' file.
Agreed.
Is there a way for me to apply my simple TVI correction to get the colour on target without buying KPS?
Thanks in advance for the valuable advice.
Your friend can apply the curve if he really wants to, this is easy to do for the person sitting in front of KPS (either locally or via remote support software). The controls are part of the Open Connectivity options when one sets up a Hot Folder. That being said, as mentioned above - I would not go down this path in a proofing situation.
I am happy to help. A lot more information is required, so I would need answers to many questions and it would also probably help to see screen shots of various KPS windows.
EDIT: Initial questions include -
1. What make and model printer? Is it using OEM inks?
2. What make and model paper?
3. What Media Configuration is in use?
4. Is the Media Configuration Calibrated?
5. ICC Settings - What are the Input Profiles settings?
6. ICC Settings - What are the Simulation Profiles settings?
7. ICC Settings - What are the Proofer Colour Space settings?
Questions 3, 5-7 are best answered with screen captures.
