Matte-Gloss Strikethrough

I have a question about the matte-gloss strikethrough technique, where spot matte is followed by flood gloss, so that the gloss is neutralized over the matte areas. Basically, I want to know whether a special combination of matte and gloss coatings should be used, or if it works in general.

As long as the Matte varnish is wet going into the gloss coating it seems to work with everthing we have tried
