Mixing with coatable pantone inks

Seeing if others out there are have trouble matching the pantone book with coatable mixing inks. Seems every ink company tried is same problem. Does anyone mix inks with no problems at all matching pantone book with coatable mixing inks and what ink and series is it.

You need to use a coating if you are using coatable inks. We have had more matching troubles when using varnish instead of aqueous. Our ink company says they use a different formula then the book when mixing inks for jobs that will be coated. In some cases if accuracy is paramount we need to provide them with samples of our aqueous so they can fine tune it from there.

The coatable inks made with different pigments and it will not match the Pantone book 100%. Most times, the color will be dirty to the PMS book. Some reds will either be bluer or yellower, some blues will be redder or greener and yellows will be redder or greener or dirtier. The best way to overcome this problem is to ask for color swatches from ink companies on your particulate substrate and with your coating and let the CSR get the color Okayed by your customer. Let them "sign-off" on the swatch with your coating on it. In my past 20 years in printing and inks and I have seen many problems due to the lack of communiation between the printer, the print buyer and the ink companies.

We follow exactly what George John describes. Customer ok's ink drawdowns with Aqueous coating on stock to be printed. We also tell them that proofs are for process work only and drawdowns are for spot colours. We haven't had any issues following this path.

Most of the ink vendors have their own formulas even for regular PMS colors and for Coatable Matches of PMS colors. Each vendor has their own formulas because they may have a different source for their pigments and other additives in their ink which affect color. Our vendor provides us with both sets of formulas for our automated blending equipment so we can match without having to doctor the inks on press. Of course the substrate your printing on, may affect the color and you have to have a special formula for that particular stock.
