No one talking about corona virus yet? - Thoughts on slowing down

You can't have Martial law without either police, military, or National Guard to enforce it. You've shut down everything but hospitals so who is going to be delivering these military rations? What you are suggesting would cause widespread panic, looting and chaos in general.

I do agree the list of "Essential" businesses is a little on the lax side. That should be tightened up. Anyone that loses their jobs, even if just temporary, should be immediately eligible for unemployment benefits too.

If you have martial law, that goes without saying that the military will be there to enforce it. Also, martial law is the suspension of civilian law, so theoretically local law enforcement will have 0 authority at that time.

All we have right now is organized chaos and widespread panic. People just haven't gotten the nerve to start looting yet. Have you seen the grocery stores lately? Now imagine we have 1 million people infected with COVID-19. A lot won't even be presenting symptoms at the beginning. They are still allowed to go out to the grocery stores and banks and what not. Spreading the virus around, even though they are doing only the essential. A stay at home full lockdown is the only way we can go about it unless we want to drag this out for months. Or resume life as normal and have a Darwin effect. Otherwise, we are crippling mass amounts of people due to economic reasons, and most won't recover.

I appreciate your thoughts on this but we'll just have to agree to disagree about needing Martial Law and a stay at home full lockdown at this time.

I get 2 sick days a year. Anything over that is without pay. Or use your vacation.
I'm so glad I don't live in the USA, we have the following legislated personal/carer's leave

Personal/carer's leave
What are the minimum entitlements to personal/carer’s leave?
The term ‘personal/carer’s leave’ effectively covers both sick leave and carer’s leave. Employees get:

  • 10 days each year for full-time employees
  • 10 days each year for part-time employees.
An employee’s entitlement to paid personal/carer’s leave accrues progressively during a year of service and accumulates from year to year.

Personal/carer’s leave continues to accrue when an employee takes a period of paid personal/carer’s leave or paid annual leave. Personal carer’s leave and compassionate leave will not accrue on unpaid leave unless it is community service leave or it is provided for in an award or agreement.

When can paid personal/carer’s leave be taken?
An employee may take paid personal/carer’s leave:

  • if they are unfit for work because of their own personal illness or injury (including pregnancy-related illness), or
  • to provide care or support to a member of their immediate family or household, because of a personal illness, injury or unexpected emergency affecting the member. A member of the employee’s immediate family means a spouse, de facto partner, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of an employee; or a child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of the employee’s spouse or de facto partner.
What payments are required when personal/carer’s leave is taken?
When paid personal/carer’s leave is taken, the minimum requirement is that an employee must be paid at their base rate of pay for the ordinary hours they would have worked during the period. An employee’s ‘base rate of pay’ (other than a pieceworker) is the rate of pay payable to an employee for his or her ordinary hours of work, but not including any of the following:

  • incentive-based payments and bonuses
  • loadings
  • monetary allowances
  • overtime or penalty rates
  • any other separately identifiable amounts.
