Anybody making good use of a smartphone in their work? It's time for me to buy a new phone and just wondered if I should consider it as a tool for work (other than a telephone).

Well, we use ours for estimating, job tracking, a virtual extension of our work phone, Slack messaging, work email, and remote control to our desktop so we can monitor Fiery Command Workstation nights/weekends (ghost shop) or occasionally make emergency adjustment to a job.

On my phone I find myself taking endless shots of jobs, Lab readings and screen shots of settings or I’m experimenting with. Place the lens over a loupe for a quick and dirty USB microscope.

I also use the Android App Color Math for colour conversions on the fly.

As a service tech, Smartphone for me is a great device for taking pics of the problems and sending them to the HQ in real time and then getting the right advice on time.

I forgot to mention Skype. With Skype I can communicate with customers and see what they are holding in their hand, not trying to form an image in my mind from a customer's description. We do this mostly desktop, but mobile has been handy too. We also use Skype to communicate real-time with the shop if it requires visual input. Much better than saying "send another shot from this angle".

.... oh yes.... Scanning Barcodes. I use Barcode Scanner on Android. Doesn't grade your barcode but at least it tells you if your printing the wrong thing entierly.

you can scan barcodes using your smartphone, i also use it to keep business cards safe. Instead of stuffing collected business cards in your pocket with every intention of entering them into your contact list, snap a photo of the card and let an app enter the information for you.

Apart from phone calls and text messages
I use mine for:
- emails.
- taking photos of jobs and notes
- sharing photos with clients
- putting my camera against a loupe (works really well)

There's plenty of nifty apps for time management, calculators, notes ect.

I have actually stepped a few things away from my phone and got myself an iPad for stuff like emails, notes ect. more so things that need typing up. (internet comes from my phone, and my phone is always on me, so no issues with that)
