A key focus of drupa-2016 will be packaging production, and the Packaging Touchpoint will reflect its importance in the marketplace. Drupa’s aim is to use the Packaging Touchpoint to identify potential in packaging design and production and address important vertical markets.

This Hall 12 exhibit is designed and implemented in collaboration with the European Packaging Design Association (epda). It will be divided into four feature labs that will target: food & beverage, non-food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

The entire spectrum of the packaging world will be covered, including: technical/ functional requirements, cultural and ethical considerations, cost-effectiveness and efficiency to the wide range of substrates and the technologies used.

The Touchpoint centralizes a lot of things, but drupa visitors also need to see the stands of all the major press players, especially the digital guys. ALL will be rolling out new systems that can handle some forms of packaging, from basic labels to folding cartons to corrugated boxes. The thing to be paying attention to is not so much the hype of personalization, but the ability to produce short runs --even very short runs-- cost effectively. SKU proliferation and demand for packaging in multiple languages are becoming a big deal and brand owners are looking for solutions. Analog printing can do some of this, digital can do some, and converters who can leverage both technologies will have an advantage. Inkjet is going to be important.

On the analog side, look for faster changeovers, improved platemaking, digital workflows, better color management, and more. And for hybrid presses that blend analog and digital. These are already out there, but drupa will show a lot more of what can be done with both technologies on the same press.
