Founded more than 50 years ago in Los Angeles, Great American Packaging (GAP)—a vertically integrated, family-owned-and-operated manufacturer of custom printed, flexible packaging—extrudes, prints and converts branded products into a wide range of styles & sizes. GAP found certain drivers were influencing brands, customers & their own growth:
  • A demand for sustainability,
  • Government & retailer mandates demanding eco-friendly alternatives to non-recyclable, multilayer stand-up pouches & films,
  • Need to cost-effectively produce those recyclable, multi-layer pouches & films with sophisticated artwork & colorful branding in order to stand out in today’s flexible packaging market.
In order to meet their evolving demands, GAP elected to purchase a Flexotecnica EVO-XD 8-color press, increasing their 6-color products to 8-colors, allowing the creation of both process & spot-color images and meeting customer demands for better branding & their own automation goals. A key factor in their selection process was the need for cutting-edge maintenance & repair support. Interactive glasses from Koenig & Bauer allow direct connection with a technician, giving GAP a real-time, functional view. Flexotecnica’s automation features were also major factors in their decision:
  • Optical error detection,
  • Automated viscosity control,
  • Auto wash-up,
  • Auto impression setting,
  • Servo control,
  • Job-setting memory,
  • Automatic splicing, and
  • Automatic tension control.
