Perfect Binder suggestions

We will be adding a Perfect Binder of some sort ASAP. I have no P-bind experience, and I am trying to help from the Pressroom side. What are the most common problems with P-bind? Things to watch for? Which machines work best/worst?

Hi CKL,

How many books on average would you bind a month, will you be folding the sections first, how much room have you got for the binder?

If you are only doing small runs then the Horizon BQ270 is a good solution, it will only do about 300 books an hour maximum, if you are doing bigger runs then the horizon BQ440 is a faster machine, doing about 1200 an hour, if you are doing very large volumes and have a lot of room then you would want a hoppper fed perfect/burst binder which are a lot quicker but you do need a lot of room and a few operartors.

Another thing is trimming the books after they have been bound, if you are buying a smaller binder you can pick up old three way trimmers, dont buy new ones they are far too overpriced, or, you can just use your guillotine, make sure you get a sponge magnet to put on the clamp to stop the spines cracking.

As far as problems go, there arent many with the horizon type perfect binders I have ever seen, you just need to set them up correctly and away they go.

Hello! Far as perfectbinders go we recently purchased a Heidelberg Eurobinder, works great and tripled the output over the Borg. The Borg was a fine machine but became too slow for our business. Either one does a good job and can be ran by a single operator but neither has inline trimming. The Euro has a better cover feeder and glue pot.

As far as the pressroom side goes, perfectbind layouts usually have natural gutters for slowdown wheels. Just don't forget to knock out any ink, varnish, or coating that your glue won't stick to and make sure you leave a glue catcher at the head or foot of your covers.

Sheetfed, Sigs will fold prior to bind

Thanks for the info

one thing to think about - PUR adhesive vs. Regular book adhesive. If you are never going to bind coated stock - regular will be fine. But if you plan on have coated book, look into PUR. We do not have a binder in house, but have a few around the area that we do business with.
