I am curious about what people actually do. Do people apply curves and also use ICC profiles at the same time?

ICC Profiles used when converting RGB to CMYK, then one set of curves applied for G7 tonal curves, which are in some respect dot gain compensation curves, no separate linearizing step needed, CTP is stable, one set of curves for gloss, one for uncoated. Measured at press with i1 and PressSIGN software, curves updated on the fly from live job info only as needed, when and if it gets out of spec\tolerances in pressSIGN. ICC Profile is Gracol profile modified to MaxGCR, works amazingly well for fast rollups to color, stable color too, 20 micron FM screening also. You asked!

We apply a curve to make the plate linear (our plate/platesetter combo is almost linear right out of the machine), then apply a G7 curve to the individual CMYK plates. We have 3 presses, so 3 different G7 curves for the presses. That's it.

If you have found a way that gives you consistently good results... great! keep using it, but if you find yourself constantly tweaking then you are kidding yourself!
