preps 5.3.3 and available text-mark variables …

below is the official list of known variables for preps 5.3(taken from their help-file) … any known variable for page identifier? have tried examples such as $page $pg $pag $pg# $page# … but no cigar. guessing one wouldn't be able to create a custom-mark for something like this … probably would need to be hard-wired into the software? perhaps there is variable from newer version of preps that might be compatible?

$Comment
Text from the Comment box in the Print dialog box

$Color
Color name for the current separation

$ColorNum
Numeric identifier for the color

$Customer
Customer ID number specified in the Job Notes dialog box

$Date
Date indicating when the job was last printed to file

$Device
Name of the device to which this output is printing (derived from its Nickname in the Device Configuration dialog box)

$JobDate, $JobTime
Date and time indicating when the Preps job was last saved

$JobID
Job ID number specified in the Job Notes dialog box

$JobName
Job file name (includes the .job extension)

$Job_Title
Job title

$LocaleLongDate $LocaleJobDate
Same as DATE and JOBDATE, except that the applicable format is applied based on the current international settings at the operating system level

$PressRunNumber
Sequential number of this press sheet as it appears in the job's signature list (This is different from the book signature number.)

$PressSheetName
Press sheet name as derived from a JDF or Preps job

$SheetHeight
Height of the press sheet, in the unit that is currently selected in Preferences

$SheetWidth
Width of the press sheet, in the unit that is currently selected in Preferences

$Side
Press sheet side (A = front or B = back). For multiple-web signatures, additional sides are labeled C, D, and so on. If sides are printed together, this variable is blank. would definitely be helpful for those books which have no pg# printing.

$Sig
Number of the current job signature

$SigName
Name of the current job signature

$Template
Relative path and name of the signature's template
Note: The relative path starts at the default Templates folder (as set in the Preferences dialog box). A colon [ : ] is used to delimit any subfolders in the Mac OS or Windows path.
For example, if a template is located on Windows at C:\Program Files\Preps X\Templates\TimeMag\32x44.tpl, then the $Template variable will be replaced by TimeMag:32x44.tpl.

$Time
Time the job was printed, using the 24-hour clock

$Web
Numeric identifier of the current press sheet

$XTile, $YTile
Horizontal (X) and vertical (Y) tile identifiers. If all tiles are printed together, this variable is blank.

$[PageFileName]

This one works for us with Preps 5.3, but we're using it in a Prinergy workflow so I don't know if it will work in a standalone Preps workflow, or with other setups.

$[PageFileName] works like a champ, dcurry … appreciate the heads up. and we are using same workflow as yourself.

Glad it worked for you - just know that it picks up the name of the page closest to the mark, so you can have more than one if needed.

the $[PageFileName] variable, and a plethora of others, are nestled inside prinergy's help-file.

another helpful id would be $[PagePositionNumber]*** … which captures/relays the pg# within the imposition placement. comes in handy when dealing with multiple sections within one layout, if physical pg#'s are nowhere to be found.

***same identifiers as $[PositionNumber] or $[PPN] .
